We use to do just that on 1/2A and small A planes. Either full strip across the top or the X type weaving it over and under...

Just keep your eye on it, visually inspect it every flying session.

If you do decide to build with foam, a couple of good things you'll discover if you don't already know them.....it's much cheaper than balsa and much easier to repair in case gravity goes to work on...
