What you would need with a 500 Amp shunt is a digital volt meter with a 200 MilliVolt range. That would allow the voltmeter's 0.1 Millivolt resolution to read to one Amp resolution.

Checked my Sears Clamp on meter

I've checked my Sears unit on DC current levels. It's within its specified plus/minus 3% accuracy. If more accuracy is required, precision shunts are required for currents above 100 Amps or so.
