It is a stand-alone unit. You don't need a computer at all unless you want to upgrade firmware or use Companion 9X to make changes a bit simpler.
I just do my changes on the TX itself.

Mine has the 64 chip. I bought 12th May 2012. I think they changed within a month or so after that to the larger one.
