I am using an old Hitec radio that I had sitting around so it doesnt' bind. I have the lead from the ESC going to the RX channel 8 where it says batt. Is that not correct? It works the throttle there.

You can hook the three leads up in any combination and the motor should spin. But, the wrong combo will make it spin in the wrong direction. That won't hurt the motor, but airplanes don't fly backwards so well.
1. Is your receiver bound to you transmitter?
2. What lead is going to the "batt" terminal on the receiver?
