What brand of transmitter and what brand and model of receiver? Make certain you're not flying a "Back yard" type of receiver.
A full range
receiver operating with the Spektrum line of transmitters will still be pretty much out of sight, even while pointing the antenna directly at the model. This is true of most quality brand names of radio systems.
These 2.4 Ghz radios have a range of several miles or more. Some have been tested to over 4 miles. They are limited by a direct line of sight. If you can't see the model because of trees, or other obstructions, you can't control the model. If you're wondering about that range of miles, take a look at that cellphone in your pocket. Similar technology, also working with microwave frequencies.
