I should note we are super lucky at our field. We don't have the typical "safety" fence. We use tall, thick grass. This has the added advantage of not destroying planes either. But it effectively stops the planes and works well for the intended purpose.
I am surprised more clubs don't adopt this.
I think a 2ft fence is about the worst thing a club could do - as you point out it is too easy to forget and it actually BECOMES a safety hazard - just as you point out. The other common injury is broken bones from the resulting fall. Too many try to leg over those and it just causes issues.
If clubs use a fence they need one that is too tall to leg over and then it is very hard to "miss".
At any rate - glad you are ok! Hope the plane is too!
