For anyone interested - there's an incident that occurred with a UK Fleet Air Arm pilot with Harrier ...
He was running low on fuel and saw a small ship steaming along ... so he grabbed the opportunity and did what a Harrier does ! He landed it on the small ship... The ship was so small - his wing was wider than the ship .. his U/C actually rolled on the container tops and dropped of the back of the containers.
Everything was hunky dory .. the story goes that once the crew had got over the shock of this unexpected visitor ... they claimed Salvage !! It was a Spanish ship and they refused to let the Royal Navy habve their Harrier back ! They literally held the Royal Navy to ransom for their Harrier back !!
It's also to be noted that the British flagged Bay Class / Atlantic Class Container ships were listed for secondary roles with UK and US Navy - for Harrier and STOL duties ... the specific ships powered by derivatives of the Concorde engines ...
When the US Navy withdrew their part of funding - the UK Navy couldn't carry the financial burden of them and they were re-engined with conventional heavy diesels.
Those were the days !!
