motor/prop suggestion for Nitroplanes Predator RQ-1 UAV?

I decided to buy an ARF Predator UAV from Nitroplanes and realized that this plane has the motor in the back of the plane for pushing... So what kind of motor/prop setup do I need? Do I need a reverse pitched prop, or do I reverse the polarity on the motor?

I haven't yet chosen a brushless motor or esc for this build, so any suggestions are appreciated. This is the 63" Predator version with ailerons.

"Watt meter results with above set-up: 14.5A / 160W / 11V with just about 90w/lb.
The performance is just perfect for me as I tend to fly the Predator scale-like for the most part. It's also fun to fly it like a powered glider, high enough to become a speck (never a problem with the range of the AR6100 2.4) then motor off and thermal around for 10 min. or so......then do it again. With the prop size, I found that anything larger than a 9" will certainly invite lots of prop strikes on take-offs as well as landings. Let me know what you decide to do and photos are welcomed."

this would be my suggestion @ 266 Watts, and just make sure the prop numbers are pointing to the front of the plane, if the motor turns backwards, just change any two of the three motor wires to reverse rotation, hope that helps, Chellie

</TD></TR><TR><TD>What a great deal, I mounted it on a scrach built seaplane 800 grams, pulls almost vertical off the water, once it gets on the step.3S1P 11.1 2100 Lipoly, 30 amp Push ESC.

9X6 3 bladed Master Airscrew Prop.
24 amps 266 watts.

Motor barely gets warm after 12 - 15 minute flights. Light freshwater spray don't seem to hurt it at all. Keep up the good work HC.

Chellie, there is a difference between an 800g plane and a 63" Predator. That Turnigy might get a lot hotter if it is drawing more than the 8-10A average it is using on the seaplane.

That said.. it does seem that the 160W from the A20-22L is enough... so the Turnigy should be good.

Hi Dr Kiwi I think the AMP specs on the motor are a type O, reason being, is that all the people useing it, are using it at 20 to 30 amps, and they are reporting that the motor stays cool, some are using that motor with a 12x6 prop with no problems, thats what leads me to belive Hobby King made a type o on the specs, here are a few reviews, I would not run it with that big of a prop its in a pusher too, so I took the little less cooling that it would get too, into concideration, Take care, Chellie

</TD></TR><TR><TD>purchased this motor to install in my new Precision Aerobatics Addiction 3D plane all up weight = 27oz. or 765 g. I am using it with the Turnigy Plush 30amp Speed Controller, 4-HXT900 servos and a Thunder Power 2100mah Prolite lipo. I have tested this motor with a APC 11 x 4.7SF and APC 12 x 3.8SF props. The APC 11 x 4.7 pulls peek of 30.27 amps but quickly settles down to 28.51 amps @ 11.1 volts. The APC 12 x 3.8 pulls peek of 33.36 amps but quickly settles down to 31.56 amps @ 11.1 volts - both tests are at full throttle on the ground. In flight I have flown both props for 10 min doing about the same 3D stunts and found this motor to have unlimited vertical climbing power and running around 110 deg after a flight with the 11 x 4.8SF and around 126 deg after a flight with the 12 x 3.8SF props. This motor runs VERY smooth and quiet. For the price, I should have purchased more even if I had nothing else to put them into! If you are into 3D flights and have an aircraft around the same weight as mine, you will not be </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I may be making an unwarranted assumption that the Turnigy motor is essentially the same as the 72g Gemini C35-30-C (1100Kv) motor I tested. I found that, on the bench, it got pretty darned hot (60C) with a 10x6 GWS HD and just 16.40A/177W through it.
