Scale Cessna 172 or 182 ??

I'm looking for a nice scale Cessna 172 or 182 to re-skin like my late Grandpa's first plane.


The best looking one I've seen so far is this from Banana Hobby:

BUT, I've heard so many horror stories about Banana Hobby that it makes me leary. I do know that RedCat and Art-Tech re-boxed this as well, but I don't see any on the web.

Anyone know of any other nice looking scale Cessna 172/182s?

I've got an old Hobby Lobby 172, but I do not like it at all.

Its a fine thing you are doing, remaking the aircraft as a tribute to your late grandfather, my sincere condolences on your loss my friend
Im doing the same for a dear friend who recently passed away
His last build was a Percival mew gull, so ive decided to build one in his honor and christen her the "Fearless Fly", as that was his callsign at the forum we both were members of

Boy it's hard to find one that looks just right. Maybe I'm too picky. Even the BH one has a funny looking cowl.

Actually, that's my least favorite as I have the Hobby Lobby version and it flys like a fighter without flaps.

I thought the HL cessnas where all foam,which model do you have?
I cant seem to find one exactly like that one i linked too
The one i linked too at HK is an all Balsa model and from all the reports reviews and videos ive seen on them flies wonderfully and is made very well for an arf
They are nothing like the foamy versions

Ahh they do look quite simuilar dont they
But all these cessnas fly like how did you put it "like a fighter without flaps"
I have an older art tech 182 and that about sums up her performance perfectly

If you are able to build from a laser-cut short kit, Pat Tritle has a really nice 54" w/s 172 and a complete build thread on RCG E-Zone Scale Electric forum. His designs are purposely designed as light weight models that can fly at scale-like speeds in fairly confined spaces. This one has flaps, ABS cowl, etc. You can add details like lights, etc., as you see fit and still have scale-like performance. Callie Graphics can make up vinyl graphics that will look just like grandpa's.

It flies great. I have one and love it. Very stable and predictable but with plenty of aerobatic ability should you want to fly it like a warbird.

Very cool paintjob pichuete! What kind of paint did you use? Been wanting to give mine a new livery too.

Top Flight 182, I think it has an 80" wingspan and flaps you can also get a cockpit kit for it. You can get all the details at towerhobbies.com/TOPA0906 Top Flite Cessna182. You can get it as an ARF or kit.

I have the Hobbyking 182 with flaps ... see another thread where I sort out a few niggles and fly it.

TBH - it doesn't need flaps .........

There are a lot of Cessna 172 foamie and balsa ARF's some of which are light enough and fly well. Pat Tritle's C-172 short kit is designed for very light weight and can fly slow and scale like if that is important to you. There is a build thread on RCG E-Zone Scale Electric Plane forum.

PS: This is one of Pat's simpler designs and should be an easy build followiing his build thread and contacting him by e-mail for help if needed. These "short kits" have large plan sheets that must be reviewed carefully before you start and you must plan detailed assembly steps so that you dion't have to undo and redo things in proper order. The plans plus the build thread desciptions and photos plus Pat's building tips on his website should be the equivalent of detailed plans and instructions you'd find in an expensive complete kit. His buildng tips include covering, gluing and finishing wheel pants, etc, etc. Your biggest challenge is finding covering, accessory items, and necessary supplies and materials, etc. If you build one short kit sucessfully you will be able to build them all successfully. There is no thrill like the maiden flight of a model that you have built, covered, decorated, and adjusted yourself. If built straight and balanced and powered correctly they fly beautifully and scale like.

Here are a couple of pics of my Tritle Stinson Reliant short kit bash. His protype weighed 28 oz, mine weighs 52 oz with complete detailed panelled cabin, major modifications including operating doors, inlayed nose and cabin area, etc.etc, Mine has to fly a little faster but handles well. Most of Pat's lightweights can handle some added detail without losing flight performance.
