Sig Kougar Mark II

Well I picked this kit up at least a year and a half ago on EBAY. Started building this about month ago.

Did as much lighting of this kit as a could from looking at others that have been built it on our sister forum.

Did lightening holes in the tail feathers and fuselage. The plywood doubler received a bunch of them plus I cut the length of it down to just past the wing saddle.
The plywood doubler wgt.78 grams each before trimming and lightening holes. after the trimming the wgt. was 58 grams a total of 40 grams shaved off. I forgot to keep track of the fuse and tail feathers, but it did make a difference in the wgt.

Never built a plane that had so much sanding and carving involved with it, and I am still not done with it yet. Balsa dust was in the air did this out in the garage. When I was done with the shaping and sanding. I used the leaf blower to clear it out.

I put this together to see how the CG was I used a 4cell 4000 mah battery and was surprised that it was almost spot on. One thing I forgot to add to the nose was the 60 AMP esc this will help. Once the covering goes on I am sure it will be a different story.

Mike I just liked the looks of this plane at first. Then the more I read about it made me want one even more.
I started reading around, and couldn't find one owner that had a bad thing to say about it.

I weighed the plane with all the electronics and battery plus the wheels. I am at 4 lbs 5oz. not to shabby. Covering is going to add some wgt. though.

Ya pull yours out and breath some new life into the old bird.

looks real nice john,what colors are you going to use? i built the Sig cobra which is the cougars kid sister and she flys great...not super fast but fast enough to look good in the air.one mistake i had to fix was to lengthrn the nose gear and i still mow the grass on takeoff..lol..

Stuart I am going with grey on the fuse, as of now true red on the turtle deck. Wing will be be red, white, and blue in some type of patten.
Remember I hate covering well another problem I have is being creative with a covering scheme.
I must have changed my mind on this a dozen times now I know how a woman feels trying to pick out shoes to wear.

So I am set on the colors just need to settle on a scheme with my limited creative juices.
I still really like what you did with your Cobra that's a sharp looking cover job.

I built one back in the day Gramps and yes Sig's idea of a kit was to hand you a block of balsa and tell you to carve your parts out of it . lol They fly like they are on rails and the tri landing gear are fun on black top. Looks great Gramps ,but you have been hiding your great building skills on us you monkey you BTW i found this the other day and put it my build list .http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1662128

One of our club members gave me a box of Lustre Coat spray paints to match Monocote.

Joe this kit has the most sanding and carving I have done so far. Should of posted some picks of my finger tips after carving those big blocks of balsa on the wing tips. Had a couple of slips nothing major I can still work the sticks. By the way this gramps got talent I just don't let it out enough, and play.

Paul I am using Ultracote in true red, corsair blue, and grey plus the white. The only thing I will have to paint is the cowling the rest will be covered.

Not much time during the week to work on this after I get home from work, but I putter on.

I epoxied the wing saddle to get a nice fit between the wing an fuselage using lots of micro balloons mixed in. Make's it so much easier to sand if it is to tight with the covering on. Also managed to get the tail feathers and turtle deck permanently attached.

Everything has been given the final sanding and has been tacked clothed to remove any dust. Did that this weekend I had no flying weather so no excuse could keep me away from making more balsa dust.
Time to warm up the iron and get covering!!
Ah did I mention I hate covering?

Started on the covering have the white down on the wing and trailing stab and rudder covered. Did this the other day a nice white canvas to add trim to.
Started getting some color on the wing tips red and blue are down.
I tried heating and stretching the red covering on the tips for the first time. The first one came out with some wrinkles and the second attempt came out a lot better. Just need to heat it first then pull and tack it down. My wife helped hold down the wing it does take some force to get the covering pulled and then iron it in place.
Next is to try and mimic the Thunder bird on the bottom of the wing.
Just taking my time and doing a little bit each night makes it more enjoyable. What do they say baby steps.

Looks great so far. That's a neat paint scheme.
I have a can of Dove gray Lustercoat if you want it.

I did not dought your talent for a minute Gramps you are making us older guys look better and better. I'am drawing my own plans on a new plane but i still stop in to see you build this gem. She is going to be a looker Gramps ! joe

very nice john!! i like the colors a lot. the last picture showing what your final product of 4 kougars joined together at the wing tips to appear flying in formation will look very cool...lol.....[jk].

i did see someone fly a smaller version of the 4 blue angles rc planes flying together...very cool and funny to watch fly.

Paul thanks for the offer, only paint will be on the cowl unless I can iron on the ultra coat to it.

Joe thanks for the kind words easy kit to make once you get past the blocks of balsa. I think the covering job is what will make it look sharp.

Stuart I saw that video of the four planes stuck together that was sharp once he got it figured out. They looked sharp doing a fly by like the real deal.
Nothing done tonight just played around with making a paper template for the thunder bird design needs some tweaking, but should look good in the end.

Well made a template to mimic the Thunderbird on the bottom of the wing. Came out pretty good considering I am going by the pic and the jet has a more swept wing. Also have the bottom, and sides are covered next is the top with more patterns to make for the rudder.

Paul thanks for the kind words, so far I am real happy with what I have going on.

Well been slow going have most of the trim done need to locate some blue stars to dress up the tail feathers I am not up to cutting them out myself.

Right now I have been working on the stuff that just doesn't show progress. Servos are all installed Hitec 225BB's on the rudder and stab. The aileron's each have a Hitec 82mg's running them.
I am debating going all out and buying a True Turn Turbo spinner for this still haven't decided they do look nice and provide some extra cooling. I bought a used Axi 2826/10 in great shape should have plenty of power to fly the Kougar.

I have an AXI 2826/10 - great motor. In a similar sized model to your Kougar, started out on an 11 x 5.5 APCE on 4S 3600mA. Pretty good, but suspect from a single flight that a 10 x 7 APCE will be a better match. That would go down well with your model's trike UC too.

I use a Castle Creations ECE Lite 50 ESC with BEC, works well like all my CC stuff. Current draw is around 42A IIRC. Unfortunately, it's now the Chicagoland 'building season' so accurate re-checking may take a while, as hypothermia is not fun and running a near 600W model indoors in a condo can be too much fun.

Keep on building, your model looks real good.

Thanks for the motor info one reason I bought this motor, and your right not much clearance for the prop on this plane. The AXI site says it can run a 11x8 prop so the 10x10 might be okay have to pick one up and see what the amps and watts are.
You either have to bend up new landing gear or go with bigger tires. Either way it's a wgt. gain that I want to avoid.
Just got my sport bec in from dimension engineering , and soldered that to my battery connecters on the ESC. Now find a home for it in the fuselage.

Hi Gramps
You've run into the big bug of electrocution - using our props with trike gear UC. My next project, I tried real hard as the inspiration model is from an type and era of well nigh universal trike gear set-ups. In the end, I saw someone's rendition of the design I was working off with a taildragger set-up, so narrowly avoided what would have been my fourth trike gear model since getting into RC in 1979.

Your Kougar really needs that trike gear - through retracts would be very nice - maybe you could live with longer UC legs? Bigger wheels do not sit nicely with this slinky Kougar!
