Default Phase 3 F-16

Hello all,

After reading all the good reports of the Phase 3 F-16 I purchased a kit from Hobby People. Attached are the photos of my F-16 in Colorado ANG Minute Men colors. 70mm fan on four cells 2200 mah.

Enjoy the photos!

Gene

Default F-16 Minute Men

Hello dahawk, I just finished the F-16 two days ago. It's still a virgie. Looks like I may have to wait a few months to fly it, once the glacier retreats. Any other EDF's in your fleet?

N,

I have 3 in the 50mm JPowers/Skyangel series: F-16, T-45 and the new Katana with a Dons Wicked 4800kv setup. Cheap and are also alot of fun. Ironically, for speed, the Jpowers Rare Bear from the warbird series is faster than all three.

Headed up that way for Christmas. Mother in Law lives in Mequon. Brrrr

Pack your parka- Temps should be in low 20's, but sunny. I have the 50mm A-4 and Mig-15 along with 10 other EDFs from 64mm to 80mm fans. The A-4 is a real rocket that is a blast to fly, the Mig can be a real handful with some strange stall/spin surprises. Have a nice holiday with the cheese heads!!!

Brick, there are a couple of very extensive threads over on RC Groups covering the Warbird and EDF series from Jpowers:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...48808&page=153

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...71681&page=577

Generally, they are all about the same size. In the 50mm EDF's the T-45 is the easiest flyer while the F-16 is probably the fastest. In the Warbirds, the Rare Bear is the fastest. In fact, faster than the edf's IMO. The Rare Bear on 4S will do 100+.

Didn't want to hijack this thread as I'm a big fan of the Phase3 F-16. Hobby People was offering the kit for like $26.00 the other day. Almost plucked one to have another airframe.

Now, back to your regularly schedued program...

Love that plane stand. Where did you find it or did you make it? That is the perfect size for my planes in my fleet. Everything I have used or found is to big for most of my planes. Got to have yours.
Oh buy the way your Phase 3 looks very good as well

Happy flying may your crashes be limited and if they are not limited let them be cool.

Default An old favorite.

Boxing a tail area with plywood as we speak.
Since all the hype has blown over, these airframes can be had for $40 from Hobbypeople.com and there is almost 1k pages of forum posts of good info.

Donsrc.com will sell you some wicked, dyno balanced fan set ups for upwards of $46.
Add a 40ish amp ESC, a couple servos, a 3 channel RX (provided your radio will mix tailerons), battery of your choice and you are flying.

I really dig the edf's but my field has no runway. This model is perfect for this by being designed to belly land and gets in the air nicely from a light toss. Windy days make this even a better option. Not a bad deal for about $150.

Yeah, yeah. I necro'd it.

Been looking at this model a few times but would like some info ....

I looked at Hobby people site and they quote a 55mm fan unit. But I read people have fitted 70mm .... so what is best size for general use, without hacking too much, suits intake / exhaust sizes ? Would a 64mm unit be good ?
3S or 4S ? What size ?

Any setup lists people like to share ? Fan size, blade count, motor size / kV, lipo size etc.

How many add ailerons ? I ask because I read of the huge taileron movement, surely that must affect speed more than adding ailerons ?

Cheers

Hi Nigel,
Ailerons work great on this model....I built one some years back (with pusher prop power.....fantastic ) and cut ailerons into the wing and used the rear stab as elevator only and it worked fine. The stock set up is very good and has xlnt response even at slow speeds but I wanted to test the waters and the aileron mod was even better....smoother I'd say.
Good luck,

I have read that a 64mm shroud drop in, I have also read it needs some carving. I will have a 64mm fan assembly any day now and will post some info and pics. It's hard to say based on my original due to them improving the kit and adding some new features and a supplemental instruction pamphlet. I recall the stock 55mm (56mm some call it), fit right in.

What I see so far is that they redesigned the thrust tube to more of a taper and added some support to the taileron pivot area.

I'm going with 3s for the moment since I have a pile of them, some to 40c. I still strengthened the pivot area for peace of mind and potential voltage upgrade later on. Stock set up makes my field seem small on 3s so a faster 3s should suit me fine.

Nigel,

I'm currently using a 64mm fan with a Cyclone motor on 4S 3600, only needed to carve foam for the lip. She's nice and fast on that setup, a good 3 minutes of flying, and speeds around 130mph or so.

Nigel,

I use a 65mm unit from Horizon Hobby. It has a 60 amp ESC and I use 2200mAh, 25C or greater 3S batteries. It was a true drop it in and wire it up. No carving needed at all. It is a little loud compared to other EDFs but she goes PDQ! I left it with the Tailerons only setup. It does just fine, though barrel rolls are a little bit quirky.

72mm (2 13/16") factory bore in the fan mounting area. Can be hollowed out quite a bit more.

awesome EDF. I'm using a Don's Wicked Plus 4000kv motor with the 64mm EDO 5 blade fan. 60a Pentium esc. 2200mah 4S battery

I did all the plywood reinforcement mods to the tail section. I had my first EF-16 rip apart in the rear when I went from a 3S to 4S

nothing to it, but to do it !

Oh yeah. Definitely take the time to reinforce the tail pivots. Remove the bushings completely, reinstall by using a .093 rod that will align both bushings. Mine were WAY out of alignment from the factory. I just used 1/32 birch plywood and the templates provided in the supplement manual. The supplemental info also says to drill a 1/4" hole through the canopy for LiPo cooling. Ummm, no. Make a hole through the bottom of fuse leading into the battery bay, making sure not to disturb the canopy locking slot. Make an air ram from the bottom of a 2 liter soda bottle. See pics.
Getting closer on mine. Fan will mount about 5" from rear of fuse. 3/4oz WBPU glass on wings and a bit of overlap onto the fuselage. Epoxy glass on tailerons. Bottom fuse still in the glassing stage.
