12S 3000 mah setup ?

I am new here.

I have on the shelf several 12S3000mah packs and a CC ICE 120 HV.

I am looking for a yak54, SU29 or Sbach

what scale should i go for and what brand would you recommend?

what motor and propeller should I get for this setup?

12S 3000 Mah packs? Normally a 12S battery pack goes with a motor like a Hacker A60 series that pulls well over 60-80 Amps. That would translate to a battery pack configured as 10S or 12S, and perhaps 5000 Mah or so. I've got a Hacker A60-16M motor running on a 12S2P 4000 Mah A123 battery pack (similar to a 10S LiPo) that turns a 19X12 APC-E prop at 7000 RPM. It hauls that 16 pound Giant Big Stick model straight up out of sight. I'm getting 6 1/2 minute flights, taking about 70% capacity out of the battery.

If you try to run 80 amps out of a 3000 Mah battery pack, it's going to get hot, and you are going to get short flights.

yes, those are lipos from my helis.

In fact i have 3 type of lipos packs at home (12S 3000, 12S 4000 and 14S 5000).

The 12S 3000 are not realy used so I wanted to get an aerobatic plane for them.

In helis the average consumptioin is generally pretty low (30 to 40 amps continuous) but the peaks are very high (more that 200 amps is commom on a 700 class). this is why the tendency is to go up in cell to work more in voltage and reduce the peak current (to allow smaller esc and wires and save the batteries)

I understand that on planes, 12S is not common, witch is a bit different that the present trend in helis.

would it then be better to use my packs as 6S 2P (put them in parallel instead of serie)? that would give 6000 mah 6S (45C)?

what kind of plane can i power with that?

Yup, a 6S2P 6000 mah LiPo pack would work very well. I've got a Hanger 9 Kantana 50 with a Hacker A50-12S motor in it. That motor turns a 16X8 prop at 7500 RPM. Have not flown it yet, because of weather. Now we are supposed to get snow this week.

If you use that 6S LiPo with a $$$$ Hacker A50-14S motor, you could fly an 8 pound model with about 700-800 square inches of wing would be a good combination. There are cheaper motors out there, but if you find one with similar quality as those Hackers, they are going to be in the same price range.

Just ran the numbers through www.motocalc.com on the Kanana with a 6S 6000 Mah LiPo and a Hacker A50-14S motor and a 16X8 APC-E prop. That combo will pull about 65 Amps, 1400 watts, 8000 RPM, with a thrust of 210 ounces. Climbout would be at about 2700 feet per minute. That comes in at about 140 ounces, and 166 watts per pound.

Methinks this combo would far outperform most 4 stroke 70 class glow engines in the same model. With this kind of power you would not be flying it at full throttle a lot.

Considering 1400watts is about 2hp, you could fly a rather large airplane with your 12S but how much does one of those suckers weigh?

When you are getting into a 12S LiPo battery, typical motor currents will be on the order of 70-80 Amps or more. That calls for at least a 5000 Mah battery pack.

My giant scale Big Stick is running a Hacker A60-16M motor, 19X12 prop, 80 Amp HV Castle Creations ESC, and a 12S2P A123 pack, good for 4000 Mah. Flight times are on the order of 6 1/2 minutes with a three minute reserve.

That model weighs in at about 16 pounds, and the Hacker motor pulls it straight up, out of sight.
