The wire-through cabane method has worked well on a few planes, such as the Macchi M33, for hiding the wires. The tubing ends have to be flared and the wires neatly arranged and strain relieved to prevent shorting, as well as there not being much room to run them in. For this plane, I would have to run 1 wire per strut, as the struts will likely not be thick enough for 2 wires each. The receiver lead from the ESC forces you to cut the end off and resolder it on, but that isn't too big of a deal.

A laser cut design would be interesting, although it would have to be a bit different from what I've done here. Obviously a nice indexed laser cut design would build up a bit easier also. This design uses full fuse formers, and is built in mid-air. The formers could be simply cut in half to eliminate that issue. As for kits, it seems that the only way to motivate people to build flying boats like this, would be to give them a molded canopy and hull front section like the Guillows PBY kit, as folks tend to steer away from sculpting. For this build, I'll likely make a glass or heat formed plastic canopy, and the hull front will be sculpted from balsa.

As of now I have the basic fuse frame built up, where soft 1/8" stringers will be ran along the bottom hull edge. This type of build requires a bit of effort to build up a straight frame, occasionally cutting glued joints and readjusting. The grainy drawing required sharp lines to be drawn over it, and then cutting parts from it as accurately as possible. I've found that more than 1/2mm of error is more than can be sanded out or easily filled at the sheeting stage, requiring rework. Usually by the time I get to this point with a build like this, it's all downhill from here. Getting started is the hardest part.

You'll get a kick out of the drawing. After printing, I realized that the views were not quite identically scaled. To solve that issue, I simply overlapped the side view like the old Mad Magazine fold-outs, to shorten it. Of course the hull lines had to be redrawn, slightly adjusting them to meet properly at the step. Not a big issue though, as all the wing/engine/sponson dimensions will be derived from the non-altered view. After folding over the wing/engine area of the side view, that info is obviously useless.

Back to the laborious task of sorting out the nacelle… the Dornier Gs1 was a great Tangent!
Now if coaching those wonderful kids (T-ball), work, to-do list, and gardening did not get in the way this would be done (LOL).

Like the gunnel… Looks as if it may be a little space constrained (tight) for the battery.
The bubble canopy sure makes a nice place to install batteries and electronics.
The real challenge I see will be the controls for the rudder and elevator.

Look forward to seeing it come together

The canopy should be a good place for batt/gear, also considering it will require a forward battery location. This won't be anything near as cramped as the SM64. The peanut gallery elevator rigging will be interesting. Got a bit more done, and should probably start a thread soon. The front hull is made from a laminated stack of 1/8" balsa. Still needs some shaping work, but getting close, or at least close to what I think it should look like.

Looks like you have made some real progress, I may come back to the surface model and clean up some of the errors.
In my model the bubble canopy is tangent to the gunnel edge but in reality it is set back from the edge some distance. The military version 3-view is show this way (forward crew/turret) but I do not believe it would have been this way.
Also the canopy is not a true teardrop, as you surely noticed it has a flattened feature on the aft end near the propellers

Those are all the details that I will be tearing hair out to resolve. On the small sill at the canopy edge, I would imagine that it also has some slight surface angle, to help it shed both splash and rainwater. I have incorporated a few degrees. Many small details like that, which are tough to decipher from old photos. There are a few photos that show the rear flattened surface of the canopy, but like all the photos, they are only so good. I'll probably sculpt a few of them before I get something that will pass TLAR QC. Brings back memories of sculpting the Seabee engine cover mold.

The same to you old friend .I have been building and learning in foam ,stealing some free plans from germany . Right now building a smaller 38 inch das canard stick and bigger one with plans comming soon . Here is the small one just taped together for a picture. I have added the wing tips and scalops to the ail and the elev and working on the twin rudders next like the balsa one here.
I hate flat wing airplanes so i have been building my wings like this now and its working out great .When my work bench is a mess like this you know iam building.lmao joe

The canard stick was a kit in the 70's that did not last long but they flew great .It took me 6 years to find the plans for the original and i thought it should be lighter and fly even better in foam so its my first scratch build . The next one will be a 42 inch wing span with a little bigger e- motor once i figure out how this one flys with a 1600 kv motor in it and a 3-cell 1300 lipo ,motor running backwards 8x4 prop. joe

It has a very powerful (Wattage) tube.
It can cut just about anything less metal.

Its a rare modeled plane called a AIRTRUK and it is a crop duster. I seen my first one in a mad max movie and wanted to build one ever since. I pm,ed you the plans Sir . I know of only two guys that have drawn plans ,one is a big 1/3 scale and the other plan i sent you was a 40 size nitro. It was a happy day for me when i hunted the free plans down. BTW it is a very nimble plane but not many left in the world. joe
