I was in the same boat a few months back and got the same advice. Good advice! I bought a used Spektrum DX7S with AR8000 RX on eBay, for just under $200, and have my UMX Sbach & 3D Beast, 2 Champs, 2 E-Flite Apprentices, a Blade mSR, a Blade CX2, and my HK MX2 all bound to the one radio. What really impressed me is the more precise control. You can sure tell the difference between the cheaper radios that come with most RTF's and a good quality radio.

I've flown his lots of times. It's VERY stable, too stable for my liking but good for a beginner. It does wag it's tail in blustery conditions which is a phenomenon known as 'Dutch roll' caused by the healthy dihedral angle, but other than the tail wagging it's not a problem.

After the T-28, take a look at the FMS 1400 ME-BF 109. I think it's my next plane. Looks like it's best of breed for that plane. Meanwhile, you'll love the PZ T-28 !

What batteries and charger would be appropriate for the T28 PNP?

3s, 1800mAh, 20c or higher (I'd go for at least 25c)

I've had good luck with Gens Ace brand batteries. No doubt you will get people advising larger batteries but they would make the T-28 very nose heavy unless you do modifications to move the battery back. I'd stick with the 1800, its plenty for the stock power system.

There are loads of choices on chargers. One with a built in AC power supply gives you the convenience of being able to plug straight into your wall socket without an additional AC to DC power supply. Something with 50W / 6Amp output is enough for the batteries you need at this point, but higher rating gives you some future proofing for if/when you move up to bigger batteries.

Stock T-28 ? A 3S 2200-2650 mah 25C would be good. I upgraded the motor in mine to a 450 and now use 4S lipos. Don't do this now
Grass field or pavement ?

Charger? Get the best one you can afford. The Icharger 206B with 350 power supply has served me well but there are others like Cellpro,etc. got my setup from www.progressiverc.com Check with Headsuprc, Grayson Hobby, Value Hobby and Hobby King(USA warehouse)

There is one weak spot on the PZ-T-28. Not insurmountable. The steerable nose gear plastic turning arm where the servo rod connects is weak and will break. If you're flying off short groomed grass field , not as much stress but if its bumpy like ours, a problem. Many of the T-28 pilots have simply removed the gear altogether to hand launch and belly land.

Personally, I don't like to hand launch so I've modded my gear. In fact, more than once. Now converting her to a tail dragger. Will try using the prop wash and rudder for steering. Not sure if it will work but no matter what I try, I can't seem to keep the nose gear in tact. I'll post a pic when I'm done.

Would not be my first choice but it is alot of radio for cheap.

Here's a suggestion: Contact Solentlife here on WF. He's the resident expert on the Turnigy / Fly Sky 9X and can help you get started properly. He swears by this TX. RX's are no problem. Sold through HK as well.

Actually, beyond the occasional dead radio I hear about, usually while flashing to the new firmware, those are priced right for a TON of radio. Also, with the following they have, it should be easy to find good advice with almost any problem you might come across. Let me know how it goes, I might have to bite the bullet and try one out myself.

Thanks. Ima order the plane in a day or two, and the radio in a week or two. Turnigy seems like the most bang for the buck. And obviously ill get reciever for it as well.

Keep in mind that if you do end up with an ultra micro from Horizon the esc and receiver or all in one so you would need a Spektrum radio. The one from your Champ will work but you will have your hands full with that radio and ailerons.

Because your starting from scratch my advise would be save till you have aroud $400.00, a BNF T-28 Trojan and a DX6i would be a nice set up to learn and you wouldn't need anything else to go flying.

Well, I done it. Went to the hobby shop in seaford deleware and got the full size trojan bnf. now to find me a good online deal on a dx6

Good choice. My flying buddy got a PZ T-28 for Chrismas. He's a relative newbie and he loves the T-28. He's got about 15 flights on it so far and is actually managing to do more consistent take offs and landing with it than with his trainer. I've only had to grab the Tx off him once so far

Hi......I really admire your interest in this hobby.....keep it up!! I am no guru in this but I also had a Champ and doubt if the radio will do the trick as far as using it on a Trojan. I was made to understand that the Champ radio only has a range 0f about 400 m, which is cool for the Champ but the Trojan covers a lot of ground quickly and you might fly out of range. You also don't want to worry about stuff like that especially the first few times cause you will be concentrating on the plane and keeping it where it is suppose to be in the air!!. If you can afford it buy yourself a 6 channel Spektrum you won't be sorry. Good luck and enjoy!!

Is there any information I should know about setting it up? It says in the manual to use a tool when removing prop but it does not say what tool. The local ballpark has some blacktop, so I wanted to try it with the landing gear. The radio should be in on Monday.

Hi again!!...not sure why you would want to remove the prop in the setup process...haha . unless you want to check if the engine is there!! But if you look at the spinner you will see a hole through it push anything round and strong like a screwdriver though it and turn to remove the spinner then you will be able to remove the prop in order to remove the cowling. Have not been following your whole conversation but if you going to fly in a field where you can not take off from the ground remove the landing gear, as the landing gear tend to get hooked in the grass when you come and land, rather just do a belly landing its much easier and the plane won't make a flip over. If I where you also fit a prop saver....saves on buying a lot of props and its very cheap. I am sure you can not wait for that maiden flight...but do it on a nice windless day. If you hand launch the plane....just don't through it...just a gentle soft push with the throttle at least 3/4 open. Get some height before trying to make any turns and throttle back to about 50% to give yourself some height when you do turn to make any corrections. I am sure you going to be great at it without any nasty surprises...but if all else fails...don't worry there is nothing that a a hot glue gun can not fix!!...thats the nice thing about these EPO planes. And remember to always land against the wind. Try to bring it nice and slow and the main thing is to cut the motor completely when you just about to touch down.....Have a great time!!!!

I mean setting it up as recommended in the manual. Geting the throws correct. Dual rates. CG..Checking screws.....etc. Some guys rush to get in the air without checking anything and wonder what went wrong when they crash.
