Interesting. I remember the guy's ultralight heli, but not the Airtruk. Same character that did the Yahoo commercials, where he bought sandbags to protect his trailer from a meteor shower.

I remember the guys in the mad max movie running through a tunnel to come out and get away in a airtrk but it was the same goofy pilot as the gyro copter .lol joe

I saw a commercial yesterday for Mad Max… and wouldn’t you know it had the AirTruk in it!

Picking up the HEINKEL LERCHE II project again... it is interesting if I can make it work

I wish i could use the computer drawing programs like you do Dave its a art that most cant do . If i had 10 or so years i might get close to your talents but i would loose out on building my planes . I have friends that do all my computer work for me and its what they do for a living. I would like to see your Heinkel too Dave its like the airtruk as it's hardley ever modeled by rc builders . You and me are just crazy enough to try build and fly both. lmao joe

Hi Joe,
The CAD design is one of my passions... I enjoy the tool and unlocking the techniques required to solve design issues.
Half the battle is knowing the CAD tools methods.
I do not consider myself a master CAD designer but I can hold my own.
You would be amazed at the speed at which you can unlock the CAD tools secrets!
I have no less than 6 books that I leverage off of to unlock methods and techniques, all are very helpful!
The CAD tools plus the aircraft design books authored in the late 1940's are the best at laying down the framework of how to properly loft shapes.

My greatest challenge is cutting time out of the day and pushing forward.
My family fills my hours with great joy so Carving out time can be challenging.

The Holliday season always inspires me to refocus my thoughts on passions that have filtered down on my priority list. I guess it is we have more time to enjoy family and we are home more.

To my knowledge I do not believe anyone has been foolish enough to try an RC version of the Heinkel!
Within my thoughts I already know how it will be balanced, assembled and controlled, the only rubb is tinkering with the control surfaces and sensitivities.

If I can pull this off I have the Focke-Wulf Triebflügel mapped out also.
At some point I have to stop designing and start assembly(LOL).

Let me know if you need some help with the Truk, it's a very simple shape that can be lofted quickly.

Love... Using the tool, love the journey, and enjoy the sharing the journey!

Great builds! I have really enjoyed reading all the posts and learning so much. Keep up the great work! I would love to fly a Spruce Goose one day. One of my favorite planes, since I saw it in person in Long Beach when I was a kid. Very cool.

The fan(s) shroud progressing, the shroud struts will require some tweaking as they support the aft and fwd fuselage. The shape is not a true airfoil, most likely because the added strength needed to maintain geometry.
Will sort out the shroud then the struts

Joe,
I would agree, the HEINKEL LERCHE II, Wespe and the Focke-Wulf Triebflügel will be a real challenge but what a hoot it will be sorting it all out!
The Truk is an exciting aircraft, unusual layout with the twin boom tail, the alignment of the booms and tails will be a bit of a challenge. The fuselage pod and landing gear arrangement are also very interesting; the distance between the main landing gear and nose landing gear most likely makes for an interesting ground roll.
Worked on the shroud this morning for a few minutes, after a bit of sorting out I believe I have the methods needed to quickly model it up, if time permits will post a pic of the completed shroud later. The LERCHE II will be the test ship, if tether test work well the Wespe should be a snap! The Wespe will surely fly in conventional flight better than the LERCHE II.

Now I need to take my insanity meds

I found a older thread on the same airtruk plans and the one who did finish building it and try to fly it broke off the tail booms but iam trying to build it electrict so a carbon fiber boom inside of balsa should fix that plus lighten it up some. It could of been the pilot but i wont take any chances and beef it up . Your not the only one who needs his meds.lol joe

After a long absence from design and posting I have finally got motivated to step back in and work on some of the designs.
I deleted some of the geometry from the Princess and basically started over.

Made allot of progress with the Princess... Fuselage upper and lower circles and frame stations complete
The forbody and afterbody chine transition has my full focus for sorting out.

Forward Chine is sorted out less the spray drive curves...
The hard chine to smooth chine is not an easy task to sort out ...and had me scratching my head but after some tinkering I believe I have a method to tackle the task.

The chine of the Princess had me pulling my hair out so a quick move back to the Clydesman … a much easier project.

I'm sure that actually building that thing would have you pulling your hair out too! There's a reason it's near the top of the list, of the rarely modeled subjects. Makes the A1 look easy.

Sorting out the faired step is no walk in the park for me!
I had the chine thing done but was not thrilled with the lines so I deleted them and started over!

I now know why the after-body bumps outboard at the water line at the step… If it did not bump out then the after-body would dip into the after-body chine area.
I’ll nail it with some dedicated time and additional frustration.
I need to get the fuselage all sorted out so I can get the wing started. I am looking forward to doing the engine intakes.
At a minimum I am getting smarter with the CAD methods required to provide fast results. Funny thing is... the smarter you get with the CAD software the more jacked up you find your first go at it was!
I keep telling myself to stay strong and hammer away at it!

Chris,
Great question… todays flavor is Pro but I am well-schooled in all the Autodesk products and while I have no real hands on experience with Solid Works my brother uses it and from what I gather in conversation it is very similar to Pro.

Pro is well suited for surface modeling and from what I have read, it provides better tangency when connecting or developing surfaces.
I transitioned from Autodesk products… a bit of a steep learning curve as I started out with R14

For what it’s worth… I also found the transition to faired fuselage and flowing surfaces to be a bit to wrap my mind around. I had to do allot of study to sort out the “proper” method then learn how to apply the method utilizing the software. I am still a work-in-progress but fundamentally I believe my foundation is fairly well grounded.

As a gauge… The Blackburn project has been redrawn several times as I learned from my lack of understanding and/or the learning process .

The Horten VII that I plopped in the twin less than $100 build was sorted out in less than two hours… Mind you it is “only” a surface model BUT one can quickly convert it into a skeleton model from which all parts are designed/extracted.
I would guess one could kick out the part/drawings in 1-2 days if you had a nice block of time.

Someday in the not so distant future (fingers crossed) I hope to start cutting out the Blackburn B-49B Clydesman! I have the 6 counter rotating engines and all the parts (HOLY CRAP) it should be a real hoot!
The Princess fuselage is so… so… so.. close to being sorted out!!!! This is another amazingly beautiful aircraft.
So many beautiful flying boats and no one really models them

The water activated glass looks interesting. Maybe it could be used over foam?
