Just had my first test flight with a ducted fan version of the Flying W.

Few more tweeks required but the 70mm fan with a 4cell/2200 was plenty of power to ROW.

Went out to just taxi test and decided to go for it, bit tail heavy but was glad to get it up and back in one piece. Once I get it dialed in will post some better video.

Actually, Im not sure the first one was even flyable. All I ever saw were some still pics. It had 2 fans and a canard elevator. I had my doubts about it at the time

In any case, well done! I would have been doubtful that a 70mm fan would be able to get the cap up on step well enough to let it take off but you made it work

Id love to see some close up shots of how you fit everything on there.

By the way, it didnt look tail heavy to me. Just needed some down trim on the elevator. Of course, I didnt see it fly for more than 1 second, so there could be some other issues

Thank you Larry for your note, my hats off to you for sharing all of your info on the design! I put this together in about a day, will post another inflight video as I added about 60% expo to make it a bit less squirrelly and I will position the battery a bit further fwd, maybe I need to put more airspeed on it as it was just a initial test flight today and I didn't want to get it too far away. This was my fourth flying W that I made in the past month or so.

My Cap, under construction. I thought I'd try some corplast for the main fuse. It will add weight but it will be very strong. If I need more power I'll just put in a 4 S pack. I will be running a Hacker 36 mm ourrunner @ 1060KV.

Has anybody used 2 Liter pop bottles as floats? If so how does it work?

Not well. They do not plane.

Otto is right, I have tried pop bottles, and they won't get out of the water, because they need that flat bottom.

I tried this because the Styrofoam I was using took on water like a sponge. I switched to floats built out of Depron, and I made them "deep vee" which wouldn't plane. Once I learned (either from Otto, or Larry) that they had to have a flat bottom, I made them again out of Depron, but the seams leak sometimes, especially if I used gorilla glue, as that stuff lets water pass through.

I have found that you can have the back of the floats open as long as the plane doesn't sink enough for the prop to touch water when stopped. It pops right up on top when moving.

Humm, good info thanks. Glad I didn't install them. I have some perfect foam for the job, its a block of EPP (like) foam. I have a foam cup company nearby my home and they have 3 big recycling containers that people put foam stuff in. Every few weeks I stop by and shop for some free foam.

Oh my, you don't have to die to go to Heaven... Good for you, I hope this means you won't age either...

Check that foam by weighing it, then soaking it in water for about 30 minutes, dry it off on the outside, and weigh it again. The only foam I have found that passes this no-absorption test is Depron.
