Was thinking She would be 44" in diameter. Such are the best laid plans. I forgot that my foam core board that I use to make my pattern templates is but 40" x 32".
So Marvin will have to be satisfied with a 40" diameter saucer ship which is still a beast. If he doesn't like it he can just vaporize me with his little cartoon ray-gun. |

Nice.... Flashing Lights and a Death Ray Laser would be too funny and make a great vid!
Kinda drizzling here too and runway is all kind of wet...kinda nice with no wind though. cr |

No laser's but here's her maidn flight.
Despite the windy field conditions I took my new "Five Easy Piece" Flying Disk X-2 designed after Marvin Martian's Ride out for her maiden flight. She is 40" in diameter with a Kline-Fogleman airfoil and is powered by Grayson Hobby's SMJv2 and guided by a 3-channel elevon set-up. I am going to change this before her next flight as I felt her elevons lacked good elevator authority. I was flying in a steady 1o mph wind with gusts to 20. So I tended to keep it high while iI trimmed out. My DVR's SD card faulted so this is all the video I have of the flight. When I brought it low for an eye-level fly-by a gust of wind dropped it to the ground resulting in minor damage. After repairs and some reconfiguring I'll take her back out. http://youtu.be/joFv1bqtmi4 |

Cool Nothing more relaxing than a glider!
Just seen your award too. Wish I was a little better at scratch building. Ive had a couple...one flew for like 3mins. I still have a little v3 m jet setup from grayson, I might have to do a little smaller saucer for combat, it might do pretty good. lolcr |

The link to the free plans for each planes are posted usually with the maiden flight vid of the particular plane. These planes are literally "Five Easy Pieces" and piece a cake to build. There is a build video playlist too. |

SO Sam from Taiwan on RCGroups wrote me and suggested I try a 1/4 of the wing centerline back from the LE to the balance point or CoG which is what he uses on his flying disks?
Well, I tried this but it was pretty severe. SO, I checked the CoG (which I had not done) on my 1/2 scale glider disk (which has done so well especially since I added 1/3 more nose weight) and she balances perfectly at 1/3 back but not at all at 1/4 back. Hmmmmm. Well at least I'm making progress as I originally had the SMJv3 set just forward of the 40" diameter disk's center or about 16" from LE to the motor's center mass. So I removed the SMJv2 and rebalanced the X-II with the motor centered on this 1/3 point about 13 1/3" on this 40" disk back from the LE and the 2250 mah Li-Po upfront, still with some wiggle room, and .....success. She balances there with her nose down 10 degrees just like the glider does. So now to rebuild and reconfigure the disk again. More Later. Oh, and Thanks again Sam. |
