UAV, (unmanned aerial vehicle) yet RC...

A few weeks ago I was wondering how difficult it would be to build a UAV. Everyone says, "just use a GPS" --Easier said than done. Getting everything to work would be pretty challenging, beyond my current knowledge of electronics. I was looking at videos for some jets, then somehow bumped into this site, UAVDEV.com. Looks like it just started up recently, but I like the idea! I just thought, what if I went to the field, and showed up with no plane. After awhile somebody would ask, "so what did you bring today?". Wouldn't it be awesome, "Oh...it'll be here in a few minutes..."

Go with a UAV that already has working code, boards, etc.

Just my humble advice, I plan on submitting code to the project soon since it's open source.

UAVs are a bit different than an RC RPV flying by downlinked telemetry and video in realtime. These guys have a lot of onboard computer intelligence as well as GPS sensing and autopilot capability.

The way I fly I'd hate to have a fortune in electronics onboard!

The boards are quite cheap if you build it yourself. They provide the schematics.

BTW: they classify themselves as a UAV not RPV.

The Audrino Pilot Manager 2.5 is about $175 and does all that and more.
Its scary how much that board does for the price, and what you can add to it.


My APM 2.5 package includes telemetry on 433 and gps. I can update waypoints in flight and have a wide variety of abilities to stay on station, loiter etc. Return to launch and auto land are also well within capabilities.
