When I flew it with the snow on the snow had an icy crust and it slid in nice. I did not install the outboard floats cause most of my flying is out of my back yard and it lands nice in the grass too. I am fixing magnets on the outboard floats so I can put them on to fly off water. I am thinking about making a set of floats to be installed with magnets in the folded position too.
Hitting water if tougher than you think and could knock the floats off. I have a Magum reloaded and its very light but magnets would not hold them on so i used velcro to hold them on now. joe
I hope you enjoyed the videos and would appreciate advice on the following questions:
1. I'm still struggling (overcontrolling?) with take-offs. I have differential thrust steering, but the plane starts yawing one way and after I correct it keeps going the other way (water surrounding the plane has a lot of momentum?). Maybe reducing the % on the rudder-throttle mixes will help? From what I've read in this thread, it sounds like things get better once the plane is on the step, but if you have any more advice, please let me know.
2. Camera placement and waterproofing: I glued a microscope cover slip to a cut-off Sharpie pen cap and then glued it to the front of a bag (please see attached photos). It works pretty well and the pen cap fits tightly over the lens assembly. I'm still having problems with water drops and condensation. I also tried to mount the camera on the tail, like Kurt did in his beautiful video on RCGroups http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=4740, but the plane was much too tail heavy to fly under control (it did crash pretty well, though...several times!)
Any ideas/advice on this would be great
3. Has anyone put a drain/plug in a seaplane to help it drain after flying?
The Beaver looks nice. There's this really cute KMP foamy Beaver and Float set at the LHS that I have to resist buying each time I'm there.
I just sold my KMP gas beaver it was a 97 inch wingspan with floats. The floats that i bought with the big arf had bad hardware and the plane was not thought through very well either. I wont buy another plane off of them. joe
I have maidened and the next day flew it at the John Nicolaci 5th Annual Float Fly. She handled very nicely in the 15mph plus winds. She won Pilots Choice and Best in Scale awards. I am very pleased. I am waiting on new video and pictures but did get some.
Finally got the plane up this year. Flew like a puppy.

During the Summer, I fly off of a Lake in Eastern WA. where we have a fishing cabin.
I'm slowly increasing my float plane fleet, so far I have a 3D sniper, Icon A5, DHC-2 dehavilland Beaver, and a Taylorcraft 450 that I converted to a float plane. I'm in the process of also adding a Tidewater.
I have a Saratoga that I also want to convert to floats, but haven't managed to do anything as yet.
I really enjoy our time over at the lake during the Summer and most afternoons, the weather is agreeable, so I can fly. It's nice to have more than one plane, as I can fly another, while the electronics cool down in the one I was just flying.
Finally got some free time & "snow time" lined up together just couple hours ago to get a Icon A5 "snow" maidens. Did some donuts last night too!

Only bad thing, she kept nose-diving into dry fluffy snow, as T/O speed increased no problems of course. Also, the little camera lens froze up quickly with drizzle @ altitude.
Anyone use car wax or Rain-x? and still have a clean/fog-free camera lens during drizzle or snowfall?
My Dynam Catalina and my Super Cub with floats. The Cat has not had her maiden yet, as I have a hinge repair on rudder to take care of and a few more mods to complete before she whisks up into the sky.
