Default Lost model alarm

anyone have experience with Pathfinder Lost Model Alarm?

I am starting to try to figure out what bells and whistles to include in my upcoming Sailaire build.

Someone at field last month lost his radian in a fly away so I may be be the sole e-sailplane guider at the field for a while

Wow, Sailaire Sailplane, that brings back a lot of good memories, watching fellow club members fly them back in the mid 1980's. Closest I came to one is a pair of Craftaire Viking sailplanes, with a 10 foot wingspan.

This is a very nice, floater type of sailplane that is able to stay up in the lightest of thermals.

As with these giant sailplanes, don't even think about trying to build it without spoilers. First, to allow descending from "Killer Thermals" safely, second, to allow much easier landing real close by.

I had two of those 10 foot Viking sailplanes some 30 years ago. After doing the winch launching thing, one was converted to electric power, using a brush type geared Astro 40 electric motor, and 18 Nicad cells for power.

That worked out so well, the second Viking was also reworked with electric power. It didn't add much weight, since a lot of lead shot had to be removed for balance purposes. Here in SE Wisconsin, those two models put out a number of two hour plus flights over the 10 years I flew them.

Now with the brushless motors, and LiPo battery packs, IMHO, that would turn a very good sailplane to a great sailplane. (Unless you really like to lug around a heavy winch and heavier deep cycle battery!)

Yes this will have the brushless motor in the nose. My club is very welcoming but they might draw the line at winches or hi starts

FYI
My Viking models had a 10 foot wingspan, about 1500 square inches, 120 ounces total weight. The Astro geared 40 motor put out about 600 Watts or so into the folding 13X8 prop. This combo worked very well, by hauling the Viking up at about 40 degrees, out of sight. That translates to around 75 Watts per pound of airplane. A lot of down elevator had to be held to keep the model from looping at full power.

That should give some idea of how many watts will be needed for your Sailaire model.

I plan to do a build log once I get started

From what others have told me I may need crowd-funding to cover the monocote bill

Also pondering the spoilers. She will have them but I may not go with the stock approach

I have two low battery alarms that are quite loud and have a blinking LED. Claim is they can serve as a model locator and I believe it - long as you can get within hearing/LED seeing distance.

I'm putting spoilers on both my ongoing sailplane builds. Tight fields and light wing loading - figured I need help parking the birds.

You asked about experience with the Pathfinder LMA. I don't think I have exactly the same LMA that you have but have used one that looks and operates in a very similar fashion.

I read the instructions. What is your question? These are extremely simple devices. Plug it into a receiver slot. If you lose the glider, turn the radio off and it will send out a loud signal that you can hear.

When you install it you can put it inside the fuse but it will sound MUCH louder if you drill a small hole in the fuse and glue the finder to the hole so that the speaker faces out the hole.

Try this on a piece of balsa first to find the best size hole. Test it with a receiver and your radio so you are confident as to how to make it work.

These beeper plane finders work quite well. I have used them with great success.

thanks for the info about the hole. That was my question, I was concerned that the sound might be muffled inside the plane.

It will be muffled inside but you can still hear it for quite a way. So if you can't find a good spot to make the hole, put the beeper in anyway. So 300 feet gets reduced to 150 feet. That is still pretty good and will likely help you find your plane.
