Just for the record,I have used 2 Turnigy 9x,s for over a year now. Both run er9x,one frsky telemetry internal module, one non-telemetry.
I feel no difference in use with the 9x,compared to my Futaba 8U.
I have to admit I haven't yet used many of the programming options, although I do use an independent motor steering mix for my electric flying boat.Works great on the water!
I have now converted both my Futaba tx's to Frsky as well, because I like the small size and price of the rx's available.
In any case,The 9x was the only way a budget constrained modeler like me could afford to get into 2.4ghz.
The big brand companies have shot themselves in the foot by pricing their gear out of reach for many people.
As for the perceived quality of big brand tx's,have you ever had a good look inside? Most of the components in my Futaba tx stem from Korean manufacturers. Are they any better or worse then Chinese?I doubt it.
So you go ahead and pay ott prices for your tx,I'm more than happy with my 9x.I won't buy a 9xr,mainly because I don't like the tacky chrome plastic front on it,but I might look at the new Frsky tx when it becomes available if it's within my budget.
I have 4 txs now,but let's face it,you can only fly one at a time.

I am running open9x on mine, and it is a fine radio. I'll probably still get a 9xR at some point. Always good to have a backup. That FrSky x9d may change my mind on that, though to me the grey plastic is fairly Fugly. lol

I deffinately think the Jr module system is the way to go as far as Txs. Can't beat the number of systems it will work with.

Hi guys,
I'm new to forum, and very beginner to 'advanced / semi-advanced ' (what I consider) TX/RX stuff.....
I have bunch of questions hoping someone can en-light me .. I bet those been asked/answered somewhere before by someone, but pardon me (and hope many folks can gain out of responses as well)...

THANK YOU in advance!!

p.s. 1: I'm having 2 planes to control: Prkzone's Typhoon 3 (upgraded motor/esc/battery), and Dynam's Sonic 185 motor glider (so want 1 TX and 2 RX, 1 RX guess would come from bundle??)...

p.s. 2: I'm not sure that I need telemetry ever but.... (thinking as of today)
p.s. 3: Below I'm given options that pops out when putting this 9XR via HK with no modul (mode 2):

a) Corona, with non-telemetry RX (found it may not be the best choice though, having some of my not investigated issues and that I noted briefly from some posts... ):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._V2_DSSS_.html
b) Orange: seems this one is not available at this point (on back order)... It's a Specrtum's protocol, isn't ?? - and is this any better then other two (namely Futaba and JR) uses?
c) JR (no telemetry RX, telemetry TX):

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...8FR_II_RX.html
d) JR with telemetry RX & TX: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Module_RX.html
e) Futaba??? This one I found in different HK place, but it's not offer as 'bundle'to this radio.. why? not compatible?? :
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=14354

So I need your advice/opinion, pls!

From what seems to be a telemetry feature that is appealing immediate for me, and wish I had one is the 'range - safety' feedback/monitoring through my radio, especially for my glider.

Problem 1: For having 'range feedback/alarm'...
- do I need to have 'telemetry RX?? (and of course TX) - so seems CORONA would not be an option at all! ??
- if so.. in addition to RX, would I also need to purchase sensor to mount on board on plane? What would be a good one to purchase if needed say through HK?
- would preloaded version of 9XR firmware support it to use radio's native display??
- if both sensor and display are needed simply to handle radio range info, does it make sense to go with telemetry TX??

Finally, CORONA, Orange, IR or Futaba? Which brand / (protocol used??) works with this 9XR, and in general has fewest glitches - best reception/range???
Is claimed Futaba/IR range 1.5-2.5Km true or this only over desert/ocean, and more realistically speaking is more like 800 m???

Many, many thanks!

HK 'specialist' did not see the difference between HK $20 radio and this one... so my time there was not 'fruit full' at least to say... Neither much help so far with 'discussion HK or simply I missed that...

I just can't recommend the HK radio's to folks. Just too many early reports of defects. I think their QA is lacking on these new boxes - both the Orange and the 9x.

The FrSky is due out soon - but again not sure how the quality will be. I just feel it is better to stick with a mainstream vendor.

My $0.02

Frsky modules have an excellent track record for range and reliability. You may not think you need telemetry, but once you use it you'll never want to go without.

On the 9XR you would need the module plus a way to display information; the FLD-02 screen or do the telemetry hack for the 9XR. You need to get a telemetry capable receiver as well.

I would still recommend the Frsky module even if you don't do telemetry right away. You can always add the display and telemetry receiver later.

If you haven't bought your 9XR; wait! The Frsky Taranis will be released any day. If the price comes in anywhere near the rampant speculation, it will be very competitive to a 9XR fitted out with telemetry.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
