hmmm... I don't have any way to take a log of it, but my trex500 has the scorpion 3026-1600kv motor on 16t pinion, that is supposed to be around 1400 watts...

I have the align 100amp esc and a new turnigy 6cell 20c 2650 battery on it... I'm sure it's doing at least 1000watts...

As A well known common setup.... is that acceptable?

Here's a video of me flying it...

I have seen as high as 66A on a full pack running 20.78VDC, but that was before replacing my Phoenix 85 for the Phoenix 60 ESC.

I saw one guy a while back had his watt meter strapped to the skids and was videoing with a zoom while he did a hover. You might be able to catch the peak on a hard punch out if the timing was right with the camera. Maybe someone with a fast shutter on a still camera could catch it just right.

Ive also seen a guy strap his heli down (a wood 1x4 through the skids screwed to a picnic table) and do full power, full collective run ups with a watt meter attached but just the thought of doing that scares the heck out of me!

Or... you could pick up an ICE controller. Who knows, you might even decide to give GOV mode a try

LOL, I don't scare very easy... I've held the trex500 above my head and had a buddy throttle it up and give it full collective... that thing actually feels pretty darn strong.... I'll just stick a wattmeter on it, the wattmeter records the highest draw while it's on, so after shutting it down I should be able to take a pic...

Well here's some pics of the wattmeter after the run-up as promised - had to search high and low for a Tru-Turn center-screw spinner adapter that would mount to a 6MM shaft via a collet but I finally got one from MyAtomic and they shipped it out 2x-time - I have some video that makes the Watts number a bit clearer, but it is HD so it is taking me a few minutes to process.

Here's the Vid. hoping as it is processed the #'s will be come clearer... else I can get a screenshot from the original HD video.

Well, I'm supposed to be getting 1300 watts with this setup, but it maxed out at 1037... I didn't think the altitude would have that much effect. Probably go from the 15x7 to maybe a 15x8 or a 16x7 if I can find it. Still, this is a very nice plane - very crisp and plenty of power for 3D. No fancy stuff in the video, it was the first flight.

Thanks Don,

That power system is strong. I am going to prop back though, from 20x10 APCe to maybe 21x8 APCe. I had a 21x8 thin wooden electric from China but the tips flexed horribly in flight and made more noise than thrust.

Current takeoff mode is 1/2 throttle and take off like a sport ship that's at 100% OR use full throttle and pull vertical in about 45 feet.

4 HP rocks.

sbchero, That pic doesn't come up full size on my screen. BUT I did manage to open it full screen by right clicking and opening the link that way. your 6 second log by Eagle Tree looks good for what you said.

P. S. What does a P-51 look like doing a scale 1707 mph? (rough calc on the length of each) Isn't that about mach 2.5???

I have a GP Combat Spitfire. Had it at the NEAT Fair last fall. 4S 4900 and Hacker A30-12xl and it was FAST. Your is scaring me. Ha. Now it flies on a 3S 2100.

sbchero, here is some interesting math for you.

Your plane needed 1145 watts to go 133 mph.

In theory, when you increase speed, the power required goes up by the cube of the change in speed - all other things remaining the same.

So, your new speed is 154mph. Thats a speed increase of 154/133 = 1.16 times as fast.

That means that you would, in theory, have needed 1.16 x 1.16 x 1.16 = 1.56 times as many watts to go that much faster or 1.56 x 1145 = 1787 watts.

You actually needed 2097 watts or an extra 310 watts = about 17% or so more than the theory predicts.

Some of that extra power you used went into over coming the extra drag at the higher speed, but most of that extra 17% or 310 watts, is probably going into the form of heat in your motor.

Thats an EXTRA 310 watts over and above what ever the motor was wasting as heat before at the lower power level.

At 1145 watts your motor was probably somewhere in the 70-75% efficient range, so it was probably converting about 280 to 340 watts into heat already at the lower speed.

At this new power level, your probably heating that motor with somewhere around 600 watts.

Thats a 7 ounce motor thats converting roughly 600 watts of power into heat!!!

I have a heavy duty soldering iron that weighs about that much that gets hot enough to melt solder with only 50 watts of power. Your poor motor is having to deal with more than 10 times as much heat energy

Be nice to it. Its working very hard for you

I think I need a signature.

very interesting larry.
that is one reason i only do a speed run for about 4-6 seconds.
but to get this plane @ those speeds, (previous record was 132) you need to push the motors past thier limits. i was fully prepared to fry a motor, id chock it up to the cost of trying to beat the record.
thats also why i got a scorpion motor, they are rated to something like 350*. when i landed the motor was no hotter than about 140* (i realize that in the air at full throttle temps were much higher)

very good info though. thanks

Yeah, pushing the limits is necessary to "get there" most of the time. Im sure most all of us are guilty of that

You might make it a practice to do a nice loooooong power off glide after each full power run to give that puppy time to cool.

Great job on the speed runs by the way

I think I need a signature.
