Thanks Newjak, darylm44 and Lisa22. I'll go ahead and modify the firewall tonight to accept the 32. Should help w/ C/G and more power for rollouts on water would be good. My LHS owner said no problem exchanging motors but he as well said the 32 would be better for floats so I should not be a wuss and make it work lol!

Hmmm, I have to agree learning to use the rudder is important, especially if you're flying a Cub. It's a notorius ground looper. But often such behavior is due to pilot error then the plane itself. At least from what I've learned from mine, one, it want's to fly, sometimes before it has enough speed to move forward, which leads to the tip stall. So you have to learn to let it build speed before letting it lift off, remember you are supposed to be in control not the bird. LOL

As for take offs, and the not so fun a Cub can be, the rudder is your friend. You firewall a Cub and it's going to leep into the air,bank left, and cartwheel, or if you're lucky(?) it will just make a lovely left turn and nose over.

A Cub needs to be started out slowly not only for it, but for you too, until you get some time under your belt with one.

Starting out slowly allows you some time to adjust for it wanting to wander all over the place, before enough speed is built for the rudder to become effective.

And honestly from what I've seen, and experienced when first starting out, was going overboard on corrections, and making the situation worse. A little bump on the stick per se, is all that's needed to correct a drift while taxing.

If you hold the stick till you see the tail moving back you went to far and it's going to now swing way past where you wanted it. Repeat, repeat, ground loop.

Also expo can really be your friend on taxi. It let's you ease the tail steering instead of over reacting it.

As mentioned earlier, practice helps. And getting the tail up in the air quickly let's you use the rudder quicker. Ummm, with a Cub, you want just enough up elevator on taxi to hold the tail down, so you can use the steering, until you have some speed up, then ease off the elevator and let the tail come up so you can steer with the rudder.
If you keep the up elevator held in, the main wing is going to try and fly, even thou the rest of the plane isn't ready.

Pretty much you want to take off a Cub just like you want to land one. On two wheels, fuselage level.

Little tip you can try when you are first starting out, to save you some props, and possible motor/mount/cowl/pride damage. Take a pair of thin plastic washers and mount the prop between them, snug up the prop adapter nut just enough so the prop spins up so you can taxi around.

When you doink the nose on the ground when you ground loop it, the prop will give as the plastic washers eliminate the grab of the adapter. This little bit of give, like I said will help with breaking props, bending motor shafts or mounts, breaking the cowl, and ruining your day. Kinda like a prop saver on a foamy.

Just remember after you get the hang of taxiing, take the washers off, so you have the power to fly.

The other thing to remember is the landing gear on the 25 size cub is easily bend on a hard landing or even on a bounce. Make sure the wheels retain some toe in and the ground handling will be much easier.

Do you turn into a tip stall or try to rudder out of one?
Also, what are the proper take off techniques for flying off of water? I would tink the floats are going to be a bit easier?

Flying off water, keep some down elevator until you have take off speed and then give up to get off the water. If it is flat calm taxi in circles until you make some ripples and then take off through them. Make sure you have a boat ready to retrieve your plan if it flips into the water or crashes.(This is most important)

After a crash it got a new color schema from some Swiss air club. Fuselage and tail were re-built. To improve take off and taxing Futaba G190 has been installed on rudder channel.

Very Nice!! I like the yellow and blue as well. Are those springs on the gear?

The springs are from Home Depot. They make a gear a bit harder to prevent from loosing a shape if hard landing occurs. The wheels are Do-Bro (Cub’s stock diameter). Those rubber wheels are also better than stock during taxing. The plane is looping less; however, they are heavier.

Well she's ready for maiden! Finished the last of the float kit install this weekend. Going to find a good place for float flying and put a GoPro HD camera onboard after the maiden.

Ive ordered the plane and need to fugure out what size servo to put in the wings. Can someone measure their ailerons (LxW). They look to be about 15 inches by 2 inches, but I cant tell. With the Power 25, whats the max speed of the plane? I know what size servo the manual suggest, but we all know that ailerons dont need the same amount of torque as an elevator. I think I can get away with somewhere between 14oz and 24oz on the ailerons.

hs 81s work fine...ill send ya the measurements this afternoon if no one posts them. the power 25 is fine on wheels with a 12x6 on 4s...its a fun little plane to fly for sure. not sure on the air speed but its not fast...just make sure you are good with the rudder on takeoff...the little plane loves ground loops..smile

I guess you have to be a bit more careful with the water strikes, have you ever tried the 12x8? i even have a 12x10.....

If the plane has a max speed of 65mph (im guessing), then the servo torque required on the ailerons is 24.1oz. The micro digitals I have in mind put out 22oz and since I dont think ill be at 65mph more than 1% of a flight, I should be ok. Does that sound about right? My setup Ive ordered looks like this:

Ive got Callie from Callie Graphics working on a "special" redneck theme and I hope it turns out ok. Ive read the threads on the model and do plan on adding aileron differential and adding a tad of up spoileron for the washout. Im gonna beef up the landing gear, but havent decided how yet. Any suggestions to the above setup?

Rea, you need to use gentle well timed nudges of right rudder to keep any tail-dragger in a straight line while speed builds and vertical fin/rudder begin to become effective. Gradually add throttle while nudging right rudder until you have about 3/4 throttle and let model lift off using little or no elevator. Use rudder with ailerons to keep wings level and climb at a moderate angle to avoid stalling/crashing. When you have some altitude reduce throttle and level out, use elevator trim if needed to fly level at 1/2 throttle ( cruise speed) Use right rudder with right ailerons to turn right and vice versa.


Better yet...don't attempt to fly this yourself, you need an instructor to check out the model for proper operation of controls to take off and trim it out and then show you how to fly on a buddy box.
