Default Guillows C-150 R.C. Conversion

Like most of you I need another plane like I need a hole in the head but,,,,,,, a friend gave me this Guillows C-150 24" WS said he would never get around to it. It will be fun, tens of thousands of pilots including myself learned to fly in the C-150/152. They're a no frills little plane but a lot of fun.

As far as the electronics, I don't know? What would be cool is the ESC and motor I have from a Vapor. I know I'll catch an ear fun of how the 150 will be to heavy for that power system but I'm not so sure? I could'nt fly the vapor with full throttle, it was way to much power, so who knows it could be possible. It wont cost me a dime to try and then we would all know for sure!

Interesting, looks like a nice little plane. I would guess it will weigh in a a good bit more than the Vapor, but like you, I rarely fly my Vapor at WOT except out at the golf dome- lots of room there.

Not sure I will go full kit for my post B17 plane, thinking a lot about the EFlite PT-19. I had one of the Ucontrol ones when I was a kid so there is a certain appeal. Also gave thought to the AT-6. may have to that some day, but would need to go to a 7 channel tx to really trick it out so will wait on that.

save weight every chance you get and take it easy on takeoff....i bet you'll be fine. i'm interested in doing similar...using the spectrum ultralight stuff.

Hey dumo, I have the AT-6 and its a nice plane. Has 3 postion flaps but the completly down setting is more like air brakes. It is very sharp looking but watch the tip stall. Needs speed. Mine has all the trimmings including retracts. They are a pain to get set up but worth it once you do. My avatar is a picture of it.

What does this button do?

I built one of those once as a static model. I tried covering it in recycled bleach bottle material. It worked out fairly well but the material is a real chore to work with and was not much compatible with glues.
The idea behind it was to get a smooth scale like surface. Balsa on broad surfaces just doesn't look scale on that small scale, coarse and grainy. Well, the glue separated here and there so I threw it away.
I'd say wait on the power system until near completed and weighed in.

Well... here is a little of that earful...

If you're going to build that kit pretty much stock, then I'm guessing the Vapor power system won't be enough... Guillows kits typically come out heavy with relatively high wing loading... it may fly, but I don't think you'd be happy with it.

I'd consider some of the micro brushless motors out there... the 5 gram "Killer Bee" and 10 gram "Silver Bullet" available at 2dogrc come to mind. I have one of each, and they are really nice... and cheap!

On two cells I can easily get 2.5 oz thrust out of the "killer bee" and 4 oz thrust out of the "silver bullet" without exceeding their max power limits... either would probably fly that Cessna as long as your ready-to-fly weight was less than 5 oz...

Another option would be a Feigao 1208430S inrunner mated to a GWS LPS gear-drive... that would be a much more expensive option however...

Good luck with this project... I'll be interested to see how it turns out... been contemplating doin the same thing with the Guillows 24" Aeronca.

Thanks for the ear full, I mean info One of those motors should do the trick. I lost my manual on the vapor, I wonder how many amps the ESC can handle?

Got a few stringers on then thought I had better do something with the vapor electronics. It fit very nice. Had to cut some of former B1 to get the servo/ESC board in and used the fiber rod it was already mounted on. It's held in place by gluing watts left of the vapor LG. Cut the rudder and servo push rods and will add extensions later. The neet thing about this is you can slide the fiber rod back and forth to adjust for cowling length.

Yea you're right. I got laid off last Sept., I've been doing odd jobs here and there but no work this week. Yesterday I built from 9am to 7pm, I love it!

This morning the winds are dead calm. I'm about to get my Apprentice out for a dawn patrol flight.

Looks like it going well. I like the way you adapted the Vapor body into the C150 body, it is not what I pictured when you first started but very slick

i have the Guillows bird dog kit with 18" WS i was thinking of doing something similar but with non spektrum and only rudder/throttle control...but its shelved for now

so far the hangar only consists of a: PZ Corsair, Skyfly 2, GP BLT (with custom ailerons) and a Slope diver (soon to be motorized), oh and about 4 other "in the works"....

Built the left wing this morning. Yes, that's a rusty metal form steak along with anything else I could find to hold the wing down.

That will be light. Mine is sheeted with steerable nose wheel at around 6oz, and it really is an easy flyer. There's a lot more leeway than some think. The tricky part with this plane is setting both wings with the same incidence. Mine flew like hell at first until it was corrected.

You did a great job on that 150 !

I'm so curious to see if it will fly (I have a hunch it will) that I'm going to finish it this weekend. Have no idea when the madien will be, I need zero wind. Here's my wieghts so far.

Fuslage with all electronics = .9 oz.

Left wing = .3 oz.

Right wing = .25 oz.

Total = 1.45 oz.

Parts to go:

Cowling
Inpendage
Wing struts
Wheels (leaving wheel pants off)
Covering

Well I did not get it done this weekend, allmost, maybe today or tommorow. The "parts to go" ended up not weighing but about a tenth of an oz. So it looks like the total flying weight is about 1.75 oz, lighter than I thought it would be!

Here's picture of the modified tail parts, for an easyer build they are not scale and I got some covering done. The siver solite is a little transparent, I kinda like that. I plan on using it on my B-17.

Finished the covering. About to hook up the elevator, rudder and put on the wings. A maiden could be possible at sunrise Wednesday.
