Does a prop saver work on larger electrics?

Hey guys I want to use a Power .25, is there any sort of prop saver that would work for something that size? In the past I've had some larger (much smaller than a Power .25) motors where the prop pulled itself off the prop saver.

I have never heard of or seen any kind of prop saver that would work on a motor with the thrust of a power 25.

It would take some powerful O rings, to hold that much thrust, and if it could, they probably would not save the prop.

Only thing that works for me, is trying not to run into things, but I have to admit, that is kinda hard to do some days, and is a less than perfect solution. At least for me.

Its time to consider a folding prop for a motor this size/power.

It's going onto a SPAD with no landing gear, so I know I'm going to chew up a prop or two.

Absolutely not. 100w is about max for propeller savers. You just have to bit the bullet on larger stuff as you want propellers firmly secured above about 100w or so.

Propellers will get out of the way on belly lander's I have flown for several seasons without breaking a propeller on belly landing airplanes before. They just kick to horizontal when they touch the ground.

Try it you should have any issues.

Use Master Airscrew props, they can Take a Beating and keep on ticking, yes they can be used on larger electrics.

the sudden motor stop can flip off the O rings on the prop saver

More importantly the prop needs to move freely to move out of the way. With the brake on it may stick straight down and then will surely break then, maybe bend shafts or rip out motor mounts.

I'd be a little careful on using a prop saver on those larger electric motors, because of safety issues. If that prop saver ever let go of the prop at full power, it would not be good to be in front of the model. Or worse, have the prop saver only hold on one side, and throw everything out of balance.

As others have suggested, check out those folding props. Need to be careful with the folders though. If the motor stops turning, that folding prop could hang up on the fuse on powering up the motor, and do damage to the motor/esc/battery.

As for the ESC brake function, some of those motor electronic brakes slam on hard enough to unscrew the prop nut on a regular prop. Best to turn the brake off.

Throw away every "O" ring you have and order some Thera-Band tubing. IMO it holds 10 times stronger than standard black rubber O rings. In fact, I have to use a curved tool to stretch the band across the prop and fasten it on the other side. These bands won't dry rot like standard rubber rings either.

Gang - he is asking if you can use a prop saver on 500+ Watt power system. You are making that seem OK.

Not so good in my book. I don't want a prop flying off at those power levels.

xray328 - PLEASE don't use that on a power 25 size motor!

Yes they are MUCH better, I use them.

BUT, prop saver use is not recommended for THAT kind of power. That's just plain dangerous. For the average guy 100W is a good limit. For those who absolutely KNOW what they are doing and set things up properly you can go a bit higher, but NOT THAT high.

I kinda doubt they even make a prop saver for 5mm... props are cheap, buy a few different kinds and figure out which works best for you. I like MAS props and a couple others...works good for my belly landers. Broken props are how you learn not to break props!!

+1 on MAS props. Heck, you're spending what? , $3.00 a prop? Should not break the bank. LHS purchase. While you're at it, get a prop reamer. Good tool to have in the box for enlarging bore with reasonable accuracy.
