slow stick with gws floats

I have a slowstick with the 300 motor and 1500 2c lipo. I would like to put the gws floats on it for some lake flying this summer. will this setup take off with floats or will I have to upgrade power to make this bird fly. What is everyone with a ss and floats doing for water profing the electronics?

I haven't tried the floats but there is a flier on rcg who sells a flying boat kit. I have that one and it flies great. I would go with a brushless motor or at the least the 400 for the extra weight and the drag the water will give you. That's a 400 on mine but I went brushless after that.

GWS floats are too short, 21". You should have floats equal to 75% of your fuse length, I use 23" floats and a speed 400 motor. The step on the floats should be 1/2" behind your CG. If you are taking off from the water (or ROW) let the SS weathervane into the wind, and be careful of turning, the SS is like a big kite. Good luck, flying from a lake is fun. Buy one of those 5n1 3/4 oz cameras and impress your neighbors.

Here is a photo of the original SS flying boat along with a more recent version. All you do is remove the landing gear and rubber band on the hull. This is the thead about it which includes links to the plans. I sell kit versions if you are interested.

Hi Bill....looks like you get around in the watt flyer forums too...Lol...anyway, looking at your SS amphibian, I wondered if you waterproofed the ESC and such ?? I've just installed a brushless in mine because they fly sooo much better with one.I bought another wing to make mine a bipe, but I do like the float system you've made up, but the SS is definetly a no-wind day to fly with at the lake...early mornig stuff I would think!But I like it and just might have to make a set up for mine.

Hello again Bill...I was just wondering as I've flown float planes and know what kind spray you can encounter if you have a little chop.It's always a hoot to see how many different things you can do with one plane design.Floats, adding wings, cameras, twin motors, bomb drops, parachute men..list goes on and I think I've tried most.I live 5 min from about 15 lakes in our area so float flying is a viable option. Floats work good on deeper snow too..like the season I'm into right now....but it's been too windy & minus 20 c for 'oh" too long ... Seeing the float setup on an electric stick just kinda made me wonder about waterproofing a few if the electrics on one.

I've seen a few SS on GWS floats, and on Super Cubs. if they are big enough for a super cub they are big enough for a slow stick.

I use 3s 2100mah lipo, Eflite 450 and 480 with the floats. there is not water around me, and they have been giving me trouble. I put epoxy on them, and the stock landing gear so the floats have wheels. It works great on water, not too great on land. Maybe its just the way I set them up. Anywho If you want em you got em. Just pay for shipping and they are yours.

Here is my brother's slow stick w/ floats in the winter. We learned to spread the floats wider to be able to taxi easyer without tipping so bad on water. You can see the mod on the video.
