SUPER Quick Slow Stick Scratch Build

Hi Everyone well It was raining today, so could not go out and fly, So, My next thought was to go out Bar Hopping Na, That takes money, So My third thought was to build a Slow Stick from one sheet of 20"x30" foam board Wish me luck, Here is what has been done so far, Measured the foam board, cut out the pieces and soak them in the bath tub, to get off the paper and glue, I added some metric measurements, for our metric Friends it will have a wing span of 48" and a leanth of 38", the fuselage will be made of 3/8" X 3/8" basswood, the area where the wing will be at is doubled up, for added strength, here are some pics, Enjoy, Chellie

HI, I did some more on the elevator and rudder, added some 1/4" wood dowel to the elevator to stiffen it up and some carbon fiber tube to the rudder for strength, will be adding a little balsa wood to the bottom of the elevator where it glues on to the fuselage, and some balsa wood on top of the elevator, for the rudder attachment, here are a few more pics.

Thank you RC Pilot for the complements I have always enjoyed arts and crafts, and this is just a little extention of that, Hopefully I will have a ARF Slowstick tonight Its a lot of fun, I enjoy working with foam, so far I am 2 for 2 the delta Wing flies real nice, and the bobcat pusher flies very well too, I have a DR1 Fokker that I built, but the weather has not been good for a maiden on that one yet, I am waiting for a calm day, Take care, and Thanks again, Chellie

Hi Everyone at it again, I taped the hinges on the elevator and rudder, I use Scotch Storage long lasting tape for hinges, it seems to work very well, and on this plane, I doubled the tape on the hinges, it a big Bird, so I just want to be safe, and I added some balsa to the top and bottom of the elevator, for strength and something to glue onto the fuselage with here are a few more pics, take care, Chellie

Thank you Kosh, well I am 2 for 2 so far, my delta & pusher jet both turned out very well, its been to windy to try to fly my DR1, anyway I might just wait and get that cannon powershot camera first, to video the maiden,

Got A Little more done I heated the main wing with my hot air gun to get a arch to them, used wax paper container and my cutting board for some weight to form the curve in the wing, making some ribs, to hold that arch from foam, made them 3/4" high and the width of the wing, used some thin balsa & t pins to get the shape of the arch, I think about 4 ribs per wing should be ok, and the wing will get some carbon tube or 1/4" basswood on the leading edge, here are some more pics, Enjoy, Chellie

Hi Again making a little more progress, cut out some ribs and glueing them in, with 30 min epoxy, to give myself a little time to work with it, before the glue sets up, here are a few more pics, the wing is under that mess of tape , sanding block, level, etc, I am giving the wing a 2" Dihedral to it, to make it a stable flyer, the Tapper on the wing goes from small on the front to bigger on the rear, it follows the tapper on the elevator, its just for looks , a person can leave the elevator and wing ends flat if they wanted too, I added this info, as I have been asked which way the tapper goes, Sooo I would like to make this part of the build clear, Take care, Chellie

Hi Everyone Its Done , Yea glueing the ribs in the wing was a pain, because of the arch in the wing, but besides that it went ok, IT only weights 5oz so far I need to go to the LHS and pick up some hardwood for wing braces, I did not have any, I did not even plan on building a plane today, It was just one of those spur of the moment things, and with all of my odds and ends that i had around here, I was able to get this far, Kewl, Its a ARF now and that was my goal and I am on vacation this week, so, If i have some nice days here, its Flying for me take care, Chellie

chellie i got a bit of a challenge for you since my LHS nor lowes had the foam, i found a WWII bomber design that would make an odd addition to anyones hangar. its the focke wulf FW 42 ente. all i can find on this plane is a detailed 3 view, it gives minor details, and considering you built that DR1 from a pic, i figured you might be up for it

HI Balil thats a neet looking bomber, you should be able to find foam board at your local arts and craft store, the foam board I use for small projects is ELMERS Foam Board its 20 x30 x 3x16", Michales has it about the cheapest, and staples has it too, call around, another great place for foam is online, at BP hobbies here is their link, this foam from BP has a thin plastic on both sides, that needs to be removed at the area that you glue it at, take care and have fun, Chellie

I use foam board from Walmart. I think the sheet I got was about 20 X 30 inches for less than $3. Just have to soak the paper off.

so what kind of motor? something like a BP-21 or similiar from heads up?

Hi Everyone I ordered the motor, prop and prop saver from Heads up rc, Jeff is very helpful in letting you know what motor prop combination you will need for any RC airplane combination, I ordered a 2410-09 outrunner with a 11x4.7 prop and a prop saver, dont know if i will need the prop saver with this plane or not, it will fly so slow, I dont think a crash will hurt it Jeff at Heads up RC has some of the best prices on the net, the 2410-09 motor was only $12.00 US , Ok so I am Cheap So
what else is new Thanks Don for the info on foam board, I Did not know that Wal Mart had it, Kewl, well its off to the LHS for some bass wood to stiffen up the wing on the SS, just got to see what will work the best, and is the Cheapest way here is Heads Up Rc link, he is a good safe Ebay seller, Take care, Chellie

Hi Dave yes it will be a 2410-09 with a 11x4.7 I e mailed jeff for a motor for this SS and he said it should will give me vertical performance,with 24oz of thrust, my SS will be about 14 to 15 oz AUW.
your right, I have learned a lot here on Wattflyer, lots of smart people here, when I first joined, I knew next to nothing about electrics, I Was a Nitro RC Flyer from way back but i learn Fast, Take care & have fun, Chellie
