Yardbird Mig-29 Review

When my good friend max2112 brought his Yardbird F-22 to the field for maiden, I was absolutely amazed at the performance of this inexpensive kit. As I video taped his maiden and standing there watching her in the air, I was SOLD! However, I decided to try my hand at the Mig-29 instead. I thought to myself..."wouldn't it be so cool to see these two birds in the air at the same time".
I've always enjoyed the look of the Mig-29, so I bought her. She arrived in perfect condition. The packing of this kit was nothing short of excellent. When I opened the box for the first time, my face lit up like a little boy on Christmas day.

The instruction manual was written very well, and she went together like a charm. I can honestly say, that I have never built a bird without zero complications...until now! I had her built in about 4 hours. I used Foam safe CA for most of the build. I then decided to go with a custom paint job.

I gave the bottom of the plane two good coats of light baby blue and three coats of a sand color on the top. I then used "thicket green" for the camo spots and went with a "golden brown" for those camo runs. This paint scheme gave me excellent orientation in the air!

I finally got the chance to maiden her, and it was the most exciting 5 minutes of my life!! She only needed a few clicks of up elevator trim and she was right on the money. She flies with a decent amount of speed and can literally stop on a dime. She is easy to hover and will go into a vertical climb with no problems.

I would strongly recommend this plane to anyone with a little experience. I would even go so far as to say most beginners could fly this plane with no problems, and would make an excellent and exciting second plane!

Excellent write up, Mike!

I love my F22 but yours is a great example of taking a quality kit and customizing it to have a true one of a kind beauty!! I really can't wait to see your paint scheme in person!

She definitely is a joy to fly Dave. Have fun with her. You should try your hands at the Yardbird F-22 as well. She has better glide characteristics and looks just as awesome in the air. Good luck and good winds.

Hey the camo looks unreal. I have one of these and just kept the standard colour scheme out of the box. The next one im definately going to look at doing something like this. For all the Australian people interested in getting one of these i got mine through a company called SC models. They are cheap to about the same as buying from yardbird itself after exchange rates ect.

fro anyone looking at getting one of these they are unreal i had mine flying backwards on the weekend. What a blast my favourite plane by miles

Yeah, these planes are awesome! I actually got the color scheme from talking to a soldier from Australia. I was going through some of the pictures I had from when I was in Iraq, and when I came across the pic of him and me, I liked his uniform's camo. Of course it didn't have the green in it, but I liked the colors and the pattern.

I'll tell anyone, if you're gonna get one of these kits, paint her up and make her your own. That's half the fun right there. I'm glad you're having fun with her 3ding.

Are you talking about those $76.00 kits? I believe they have a Mig-21, Mig-29, SU-47, Etc. Thye look like really nice kits too. I've been wanting one, but have too many other things on the bench that need my attention...and wallett

I'm new to the group and very excite with what am reading.

Below is the tail art we've been working on for the decals. There will be two versions. One in white that will come with red chase plane marking. And one in gray that you'll be able to make into a USAF , JASDF or IDF F-15. The gray version will have three sets on one sheet of decals. Pilot head decals are now going to be in every kit starting Yesterday!

I have almost 40 flights on my Mig now. It's seen one hard landing, being STUFFED into a soft sand dune but it survived that just fine. Overall, I couldn't be happier and will be buying the F-15 as soon as they start shipping.

For that camo paint job, do you just spray spreaded dots throughout the plane then draw lines through them with the secondary color?

Hey bud, you can call me Mike. As for the dots...I actually airbrushed those on last. I went with a solid base coat...did the entire airframe in one color, then airbrushed the camo streaks...then added the spots.
