Flatulator (what a username!), I watched your video last night.I must say that your foamy is a beautiful flyer. Wow, was I impressed with it's flight performance. You do a nice job of handling the sticks too. Great little plane. And my kudos to all of you that modify those chuck gliders (Steve, my hat goes off to you as usual!). Enjoy your flying everyone.

Build Review My LHS Foam Chuckster

This is a protoype that turned out well, it glides like a boid, but some of my misadventures with pine dowel reinforcements leave something to be desired. Flies great with the 370 (stock) Brushless motor out of my PZ J-3 Cub and the LiPo; flies much better with an Atlas 400XT and a TP 3s 910mAh LiPo.

The control surfaces are a little clumsy and heavy, I wrapped them in the industrial strength fiber tape, a little overkillish. Bought another glider today at the LHS and hope to apply what i've learned to a somewhat polished MkII

(Also in the shot is my new FRankenSPit with a killer brushless inrunner setup, gotta CF the wing before I maiden that one )

Cheers!
gru

P.S. - Discovered in my machinations that Tamiya For Plastics Spray paint with an overcoat of PolyCrylic works AWESOME on both the PS and the FFF!

That looks like an interesting project...
So you are adding a motor to a glider?
Sorry if thats a dumb question.

Not dumb at all, mang. Dunno if you have something similar there, but ever since polystyrene packaging was invented, cheap stores like Walmart have sold these cheapo foam gliders for like 5 bucks. Great airfoil, but not so sturdy. With some glue and some tape and some patience you might come up with something that actually flies! For lots less than buying an RTF. Well thats a fib, you still gotta have the electronics. And ARF maybe?

Its all about can I do this more than should I do this.

Went back to the start and see were you are coming from.

Scratch builds look great, really admire you guys for doing that - I couldn't.

Where do you get all the foam?
Got loads of the stuff here, thats come from packaging. Is that no good?
And how do you shape it so fine?

The foam is from hardware stores usually, it is Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), used, if I am not mistaken, to create a "vapor barrier" in walls and floors during construction. You'll often see it referred to here as BlueCor, but it comes in other colors, like pink

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is the most common stuff, used in the packaging for stuff like RC planes. Thats not up to snuff usually because it is just a bunch of discrete little balls kinda mooshed together, whereas the extruded stuff is one piece, and therefore stronger and more flexible (in the materials sense)

These cheapy gliders are the EPS stuff, and prone to fall apart under stress.

Shaping? Oh its an artform, to be sure. The pros use a heated wire to cut perfect lines -- think of a band saw but with a hot wire instead of a blade.

I use a sharp hobby knife, a fine-toothed hacksaw blade, and some sandpaper

Great thing is if you botch it the first go, you have tons more to work with.

You'll immediatley notice the distinct difference between a build by a guy like flatulator and mine

Wow, mate, those are awesome...

How do you shape the aerofoil for wings?
And are the bodies (fuselage?), just blocks before you go to work with the hot wire and sand paper?

Great job, (bows in admiration) -

Steve Ol'Buddy,
Did you ever build one of those "Wally Wing" things?
Guess I'm gonna have to get back into the foamy frame of mind & finish up the one you sent to me. I crashed my Twin Simple Stick this morning and I just can't justify repairing/rebuilding it again. The fuselage has been repaired and rebuilt so many times before it's just not worth messing with again. The wing & the tail-feathers are okay but the fuselage is history. I never did care for those foam board fuselages as they break so freaking easy.
I don't have a clue what happened but both the NFS & the Twin SS were acting goofy. I don't know if I was getting hits on my radio or if all the helicopters and plane traffic from the airport was the cause. The only one that wasn't affected was the AHAA Bipe I bought for the Grandson to sorta learn on.

Standing By,
SJ

This is what a "chuck glider" is. You can find them here in department stores and even small convenience stores. They are about $5 and are usually found hanging in a plastic sleeve in the toy section of the store.

Ah, so thats what they look like before you guys get to work on them.

Dont know any stores locally (in UK) that sell these.
I will be looking from now on...

Thanks for your patience and explanations,

Wink Some are better than others

Howdy Drew,
There's many different versions/makers of these foam "chunker" gliders, some are way better to work with than others and will hold up better. The ones you mostly see here are called the "Ultra Flyer" by LiFoam with a 4-1/2' wingspan. Some of the others only have a 24" ws and IMO aren't as good for conversion. Not sure what your equivalent of Hobby Lobby is across the pond over there but that's where I can always find them locally if you can call 65 miles away local
Anyway get you 2 or 3 and let your mind & hands do their thing Maybe build a quick dirty one to test with and make your mods on and then build ya a clean looking one. After building a couple that fly good you'll be able to be like my Ol'Buddy Bub Steve and kick out 4 or 2 a week.
Good Luck with your 1st one & have a ton of fun

Standing By,
SJ

I seriously doubt you'll find anything using our Slang Terms of "chuck" or "chunker glider" as a search word. Try looking for a distributer for "Lifoam Industries LLC" in the UK or even those Wacky Noodle Pool toys that they also make. Here's a link to their site & the gliders. Maybe that'll help get you looking in the right direction.

Thanks again SJ,
But - we just dont seem to have them advertised on net over here on the rainy side of the world...

Either I am going blind, or they are just not big here.
There are a few foam push out (flat), foam gliders, but that seems to be all.

Tried all the model type names from the links above, and got nothing.

Thanks anyway - unless someone else from this wet side of world knows better.

Cheers,
Drew
