That's it! That's the ones I used to R&D my Five-Buck Chuck. Okay, Ten-Buck Chuck.

Spent yesterday afternoon doing housework, while stepping out into the garage every 20 minutes or so to work on 'ThermaChili' as I am now calling it.

Made some adjustments - decided to go with the HobbyLobby 400XT and an overkill Align 35-amp ESC with a TP 910mAh 3S LiPo. GWS 9x7 slow flyer prop. Servos are cheapy TowerPros I got from Deal Extreme when they were selling for $3.50.

5MM carbon fiber tube runs almost the entire length of the fuse on the underside, standard pine stik for the homemade motor mount, tail reinforced laterally with 2 pine dowels and gorilla glue. LOTS of Gorilla Glue The wings have a single carbon spar dead center running from tip to root. Melted the channels with an old soldering gun, ran a bead of Gorilla glue, and taped it over with Uber-strong bidirectional fiber tape.

Unfinished paint is Tamiya For Plastics, with an overcoast of MinWax Polycrylic (sprayed on in glops and sponge-brushed out even).

Build took me all of one day (once I got the design down lol)

MkII got the CoG dead on. Took it out for a maiden this evening, got 2 batteries worth of flights in. Jumps out of your hand, flies like its on rails! I had a blast with it. It does great loops, but the wing flex is disconcerting . Did a fakey hammerhead and one of the neighbor ladies watching gasped as I pulled it out LOW

Gotta get my hat cam together so I can take some footage!

Some pics of MKII, "ThermaChili"
Boy am I gonna have some fun with this!

Just waitin' for HobLob to crash the 400XTs again so I can build a 2-banger like one of yours!

yeah Steve, I been meaning to ask about that one - is that the bottom shell to an E-flite float or what? looks like it was custom built for your plane.

Okay, here's the footage. Painted up nice, can't believe how fun it is to fly!

Hatcam needs some fine tuning.

Holy macarolly! What a great video and awesome flying Joshua. I liked the sound track- "Red Sky" by The Big Wu (like from the movie "Joe versus the Volcano"?!). Good stuff. Nice plane. SteveCooper should be jealous. Just kidding Steve.

Thanks. I couldn't have done it without inspiration from this thread, and Steve knows he's still the 'God of Chuck'

Another tip of the hat to Flatulator... I know he wasn't the first person to do the hatcam thing, but he's the one who inspired mine!

Apparently planes aren't the only thing you can build with pink foam!

I'm glad the hat-cam worked out well. The video turned out pretty good. I'm having trouble locating the wings on the hat though

I'm almost finished covering my boomer. I think it needs some more yellow somewhere, but I can't decide where to put it. Maybe some yellow scallops on the elevator to match the ones on the wing? Should I add some yellow to the nose? I don't want to go overboard with this. What do you think?

Aha but if you look at the pic closely, you will see mounting holes in the side of the camera rig, and they ain't there for antlers lol

Man that's sharp. Its my next build for sure. Oh... no... you didn't just ask me what I thought about a covering scheme, did you? Oh jeesh I guess I'll have to open photoshop again...

Groundrush, that is awsome. Thanks so much. I'm gonna go with that for sure. I've got to ask, what program did you use to copy my plane like that? It's almost an exact match!

I used Photoshop and kinda eyeballed the photos - though I must confess I am working on a series of drawings for ideas using the chuck wing segment, so I already had that saved as a template.

A little this and that, I've been doing it for a few years so its handy.

any other ideas for coverings you can explain them to me and I'd be happy to mock them up for you so you can get an idea before you put the iron to it.

cheers,
gru

Well, the good news is: its just a flat short in the motor leads. The insulation was the source of the smoke. I might be able to resurrect this poor motor! (I've had it open at least 4 times to straighten the shaft and clean out dirt lol)

Was looking really good.

Never heard of motor smoke smelling like strawberries?

Hope you get it fixed and flying again soon.
Did that not affect the esc?

To quote a favorite book of mine: "I was being ironical."

Nope, I tested it when I got back to the bat-cave. It is a 35A ESC so it is WAY overkill, but I got it dirt cheap from dealextreme.com so why not use it.

All the same, I think when I go to the LHS tomorrow I am gonna buy a new motor, something a tad hotter, perhaps in the 1000-1100kv range. And props. LOTS of props lol

I'm still up because I'm putting together a parts list so I can build TC Mk2 a brother.
