I have been following your thread and heres a tip on transporting your combat planes that has worked for our group real well.WWII planes will work also.Most of the guys go to a u-haul rental place and they have lamp shipping boxes that we use.

My son has been wanting to learn to fly so I've built him a modified combat P-47. I put a little dihedral in the wings (used a SlowStik wing for the angle) and I'm going to only have the rudder and elevator surfaces movable. I'm using a "Blue Wonder" motor with a 2 cell lipo and a 1047 prop. Should get about 12 oz. thrust with a low prop speed, this should make it a fairly slow flyer. Just hope the surfaces are big enough, guess we'll find out!! Hope to maiden it at the Thanksgiving WOOF event this Sunday.

The dihedral is not complete yet in these pictures. When glueing the halves together I laid one wing flat and supported the other 1-3/4" off the table and epoxied them together. I plan on taping a braces to the bottom sides of the wing then come through the wing from the top with a brace that will tie the two together at the vert fuse. I will probably use string and epoxy at the joints, it's a work in progress (ie. I'll have to figure it out as I go).

The checkers are my son's doing. He went with a 3/4" spacing and colored them with Sharpies.

Looks really nice Greg. I like your idea of using epoxy and string to strengthen the spar joint. I think the "Blue Wonder" motor will be a great powerplant for that plane. That checkerboard work is top notch too.

Here is my latest attempt at another WWII warbird design. Still a work in progress but promised I'd post some pics so here they are. Any ideas on how to brace the wings? The plans call for a spar running horizontally through the "V" portion of the wings and bottom of the fuse.

You can get a brass or aluminum tube with a piece of carbon fiber that fits tight in the tube. Then bend the brass at whatever angle you need. It might work for what you are trying to do.

Does that make sense when you read it?? I haven't had my morning coffee yet .

Wow Tim, that looks great! You told me you wanted to try a Corsair but I didn't figure you'd slap one together that fast. Nice job!

My new one is still laying in the garage all sliced up from you big bullies picking on me. Now I know why you all were so anxious for me to fly the new one.

By Sunday I should have mine and a spare. (I'll prolly need the spare......LOL)

Of course, I'll also have one with no radio equipment or power system.....but that one I wanna keep nice so I can copy it when we get home.

I agree with James, this is the way my SlowStik "deals" with its dihedral. On the new P-47 I got lazy. I used a wooden dowel cut in half, taped to the wing and hot glued together at the fuse. We'll see how it works.

I hope we all are able to fly Sunday but according to Tulsa Channel 6 weather this morning they are predicting 15 -25 mph winds. I hope they're wrong!

Yeesh......that would just figure......

www.weather.com is predicting 10MPH winds, and a chance of showers, high of 60, low of 37.

I'll keep and eye on usairnet for updated info.

Thanks Tom and Greg for the vote of confidence. Hopefully, it will fly when I'm done... I'm still a little concerned about how strong those dihedral joints are going to turn out. Also, whether the aileron servo push rods will have clearance under the bottom of the dihedral. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I may give that brass tube and CF rod a try James. Thanks for the tip.

Not sure what my status is for this Sunday just yet. I'm hoping to come down and do some flying with the Unclubbers. Tom, if I do come down, do you want to carpool? Yeah...for now I go up and down the flight line and try to talk anybody flying anything into taping a streamer on . Next year I would like to start playing it by the book. Maybe 4 rounds every other weekend where we keep track and have a winner of the day. Of course I would still be willing to take on any Strykers after the points are tallied .
