So these would be for scratch building? Or can one send them somewhere and have a kit cut? I think I would like to do that, if anyone does that, find a nice set of plans, but have a kit lazer-cut for it.......

Hi Kev,
Yes, these are for a "Scratch" build, that is, cutting the parts out yourself. Although some would say a true Scratch build involves drawing the plans yourself, also. In any event, here are some laser-cutting services; http://www.manzanolaser.com/id1.html http://www.jtechlaser.com/ http://www.litkoaero.com/model_aircr...tting_indv.php http://www.fxmodels.com/lasercutter.shtml Ron |

Guillows were die cut, but cost a lot more than the Comet kits so they were more rare. The Comet kits parts fit pretty well too, so even though I was less than ten, I usually finished the plane. Didn't look great, but they flew. Paul |

Hi Kev,
Yes, you could send a pdf file of the parts you need (and the wood sizes, thickness, etc) to a laser-cutting firm and ask for a price quote. You might e-mail one first to see if they have a special process. If you want to transfer the parts to sheet balsa yourself, there are several methods; (1) Print out a sheet of parts on your printer, then lay the sheet over a piece of balsa. Run a warm iron over the paper. The heat will transfer the ink off the paper to the balsa. (2) Trace the parts onto wood, using carbon paper. (3) Use the "Pin prick" method. With the parts outline (on paper) over a sheet of balsa, make an outline of the piece using a pin to poke holes through the paper into the wood. Remove paper and connect the "dots". (4) Put a sheet of balsa down on your board. Brush lightly with contact cement. Stick the paper pattern to the balsa. Cut out parts, cutting through both the paper and wood at the same time. Peel paper from wood. Hope this helps! Ron |

One other method , which I haven't tried yet but will, is to get a photo copied sheet done with a laser printer.
Lay the sheet down on the wood and rub the back of the photo copy with lacquer thinner. That will cause the print to migrate to the balsa. It will look just like an original kit. |

Man, just my luck, I finally find a source for the Comet kits, and the link does not now work...
Did anyone get a file of the comet 54" Chief... I would love to have a copy as I built a couple back in the 70's, Loved them ...three channels ans a OS .10. free-hand upsized it and built one with a 6' wing and a .15 with 4 channels. Made wings removable and struts were functional. Had to fly just like a fullsize one, start turn with rudder and end with rudder.Flew at a fast walk |

Hi Paul Paul, you have honored me with an absolute "goldmine" of plans I have been looking for seemingly forever! I was finally able to catch this site online and, yes, every plan I wanted was there...and hundreds more.. The "dime" versions were the ones I was really looking for as with the new age of miniturization of radios , servos and receivers as well as powerful motors and very efficient and potent batteries, I can take the "simplified" dime version plan and very easily convert it to at least 3-4 different building methods (some of which I think I have invented) adapted to the materials I wish to use. This allows use of materials like foamboard, deskinned foamboard, depron, EPP,whitefoam, hotwire cut pink or blue 2 inch foam fuselages and wings. If need be, and I want to do a pure balsa stick and stringer version, I have built so many of my own design over the years that I can just beef it up where needed or delete a sheet of balsa in lieu of a stringer type construction for weight purposes. I can always upscale the plan to whatever size I want and create absolutely huge patterns for an extremely light airframe. I just use the multipage print feature on my printer and own a nice papercutter to trim two of the tabs off each page precisely and then glue stick them all together in minutes. Paul, there is no way I could live long enough to build every one of the plans (and upscaled versions) of just the plans I was looking for that was listed in this grouping. Those plans represented maybe 2% of the plans that have been collected on this site.... Am I gonna have some fun building....and again , much thanks ![]() PS , you were right on on backing off "comet" as there are a LOT more nice plans there as well. |

You have to do a few build threads on the planes you build from those plans.
Good luck and I found the Chief files too. Paul |

I may even get wild and do a 9 footer...but I'll have to order some more lumber for that one (but not much ). Biggest expense is the covering material, but I've found a deal on that too. Here is link.... http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/show...227#post559227 Looks like my projects are going to be Aeronca oriented for a while (I still have two Rumplestadts for electric I am finishing which are 3/4 of the original which used 2 ranger 42 wings). I owe that plane a build series as well but it will be an original size on and a 150% one. The rumplestadt was a design that was printed in early 70's by RCM and they printed the original article. The plans are no longer available as their microfische was ruined and they no longer can reproduce it as a plan. It is therefore an extremely rare plane , one of which you will fall in love with the minute you see one...and flying it just makes you have to have it. I have a copy of the plan reprint they sent me ( I had to wait a while till they dug it out). There is maybe one copy of the image on the internet. Update: here is a thread dedicated to the "Rumplestadt". Containing the most info about it. Your welcome to come join us as we "ressurect" this lovable old biplane. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_89...tm.htm#8956602 Take care. Mike |
