Giant Rc Foamie Biplane Scratch Build

HELP Now What Did I get Myself into Hi Everyone, This is my Attempt to make a Giant Scale Rc Foamie BiPlane, It will have a 6' Wing span and a 6' Fuselage, the fuselage will be made from 6mm depron, it will be a box in Fuselage, and the wing will be 9mm Depron, the wing will have a wood frame around it to help to stiffen it up and will also have 8.5mm carbon fiber tube for bracing, it will be powered by a 3520-7 towerpro motor, turning a 15x4 APC e Prop, on 4 cells, Wish me luck, as this is my first Giant Scale Foamy, It will be a Fun Project, and I am Sure I will Learn alot doing it, The BiPlane will Look a little like a Super Skybolt, but it will have both wings tappered back like a Ultimate bi plane, I had to make some special tools to draw the plans with and I tried to scale up a BiPlane picture, using a 1" to 9" scale, it seems to be working ok, here are a few sketches/Patterns that I am Making, and a picture of what i hope it will look Like when I am Done Take care, Chellie

If past results are any indication, you won't need luck, Chellie! But since I don't think a 2M foamy bipe exists "yet", Good Luck!!

Hi BirdDog I have not really decided on the color yet, I just want to make sure its going to fly First I have a van, so that will help alot, I may have to take the seats out to haul it around Take Care, Chellie

I will use tower coat heat film and red and black trim tape, But I just hope it Flies first Take care, Chellie

Hi Jasmine It will have a Towerpro 3520-7 motor on it with 4 cells and a 15x4 APC-E prop, the wings will be removable, I think I will use some nylon screws to hold them in place, I have a van, I might have to take out the seats to transport it Take care, Chellie

Dang this is a Big Rudder 15" x 6 3/4" I dont think 9 gram HEX servos are going to work here

Thank Goodness The hard part is done, just getting an Idea of How the fuselage was going to look and size wise was a chore, Now that i have a pattern, the Rest is going to be EASY I Hope Take care, Chellie

Yeah, your going to need some full size servos for this one Chellie

Welcome to the big bird club! You're gonna like it a lot.

Dont worry about it flying - the bigger they are the better they fly!

Keep the wings parallel (that is the single most important detail for a good flying bipe) and get the cg in the ball park and it will be a ***** cat.

Also dont scrimp on the size of the controll surfaces. These big foamies tend to fly much much slower than there glow/gas cousins so they NEED larger controll surfaces to maintain controll at the lower speeds.

Even if you have no intention of ever doing any 3D - make all the surfaces over sized and have LOTS of throw.

That means you will need a good bit of torque from your servos to move those BIG surfaces. Id go at least 50-60 ounce on each aileron (assuming 4ea servos), 80-100 on the elevator and 60-100 on the rudder depending on its size. You know I like HUGE rudders, so I always go over kill there

Hi Steve, Good Idea, one to push and one to pull It should work, I have some standard size servos, that I am going to use, only because i want to move the weight forwards as much as possible, the tail feathers will have nyrod going to them, with the servos are far forwards as possible, I am using a old tower pro motor that i have here, because its a big boat anchor, its heavy, for the power that it delivers, but thats ok, because, i dont want to add any weight to the nose if i dont have too Take care, Chellie

By the way - if you cut the rudder and elevator with some balance area you can get by with smaller servos.

Hi Larry Yes I want this bird to fly slow, I dont know if it will 3D with the motor I am going to use or not, but it should be fun, yes it will have big control surfaces too I like big control surfaces, More fun I have to look up the JR Ball Bearing servos that I have to find out what the oz of power is on them, Thank you for the input, Take care, Chellie

Anyways Chellie This is an awesome project, I will follow it closely.

I've always wanted to make a big pink monstrosity out of the foamula-2 board... maybe you'll be the inspiration!
