Since it's not likely we'll all get together, maybe we can posts points of interrests so others far away can see where we've been. I'll start. I live about a 3 hour drive from Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Never heard of it? Let me take you there. You park in a dirt and grass clearing and walk across the street to the ticket shack. Once through you can meander around, nothing seems to be off limits except the fueled planes. You'll be surprise how close you can get to them. The only real activity is the biplane rides, they go almost constantly just like back in the early barnstormer days. After seeing the planes on the line you can explore the lower hangers. That's where the flight ready planes are kept. Cars too. If you look close you can see a Ryan Brougham to be converted into a Spirit of Saint Louis replica. The car runs too. |

You can walk across the street and up the hill to the old hangars and museum. You're free to explore the old buildings and old planes on your own.
If you can get way back in the hangars, you can see the airplanes used to make Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. Sorry about picture quality, pretty dark in there. |

The museum is nicely lit. The only drawback is getting back far enough to get a picture of something.

Go down and get a good seat, the shows just about to start.
If you're wondering about the paper being cut, go back to the third picture in the first post. |

Through the years the story lines of the acts have change a bit.
They all seem to use a good pilot a bad pilot a heroine and some form of getting someone caught on the wing of an airplane, only to fall off later. |

The formation and combat flying over the flying farmer gets his shot.
During the staging the farmer helps with the tractor, somehow they have to take him for a ride as payment. Somehow the tail wheel get broken and the pilot has to get out of the plane. Then the fun begins. An extremely crooked take off followed by flight almost into the trees with a sharp pull up. He then drops down behind the tree line, only to re emerge somewhere else. With a clothes line attached to his landing gear. Some stalls, loops and rolls get you set up for the motor failure. Then some more maneuvering and a dead stick landing. A little more balloon busting and streamer cutting and that's all folks. Good family fun. |

I'm lucky enough to live about 5 min from Old Rhinebeck. FWIW they do a R/C model fly in every year that's awesome. Last year (or was it two years ago- I forget) a guy brought down a 1/4 scale replica of their Albatross. Possibly the finest model I every saw- and absoultly the best I've ever seen flying. I'll try to post the dates...

Ryan, These pictures are from the fall of 2006.
Before Cole Palen passed away I used to fly in and land there. I met Cole in Boca Raton while he was rebuilding a Sopwith Camel. Took him to Sun N Fun in a more modern plane. This was the first time I had been back since he passed. Paul |

Again GREAT photos Paul. I went for the first time last year (2008). I'm planing to go this year again at least for the model week end. I wold also like to work there some day. The aerodrome was what first got me in to all this airplane stuff. I loved the farmer act to but sadly I sew it the last year before he stopped doing it (he was 85 years old).
Thanks for the pictures Paul, Ryan. |

Pat, I really can't see any difference between then and now. The show routines change over time. The routines they do today are different then the older ones, but I think that is just to keep them fresh.
It's nice to visit after a few years and see a whole new show. Also there are two different shows each weekend, one a civilian airplane show on one day and the military show on the other. Sorry, I don't remember which show is which day. The civilian show is cute, they have a Davis parasol with two extra wing to make it look like a biplane. After some struggling with the plane, the two lower wings pull off and the plane takes off. I landed there only three times, the first time was with a Cessna 401. The pilots and crew hung around after the show to watch me leave. I don't think they thought I could get it out of there. I went two more times with my 310 to visit Cole, those were during the week. Now I just drive there. Paul |
