Default Towerpro 40 Amp ESC

I'm having a bit of difficulty with my TowerPro 40 Amp Speed Controller.... it's this one

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...eed_Controller_

The instructions are not very clear, but I think I am doing it right. After programming, I get a beep when I connect my battery, then four beeps together, which should state the number of cells connected. I get four beeps, but have a three cell LiPo connected. The esc then drives the motor at a reduced speed. This is only if the three cell Lipo is above about 11.7volts. If I run the battery down a bit, then re connect, I get three beeps together, so the esc is seeing three cells and it performs great with no issues and full power...
I think the esc is faulty, but was wondering if the Auto detect for cell count could be altered , or maybe it is seeing NiMh not LiPo.
Any suggestions would be welcome , or a definate set of instructions so I can check them against mine.....
Sorry if the question is a bit long...

I can't help you, but I can share your misery. I've got an 18 amp TowerPro, and I've never been able to find programming instructions anywhere which actually match the beeps from the ESC. I gave up and bought a better controller; hopefully you fare better.

To be honest, when the Lipo has discharged a bit and the esc sees a 3 cell, it works faultlessly. Never comes down hot, never hot on a static test even pulling 40A constantly..
Just wish I could get it to work with a fresh Battery....

I've not used the TowerPro 40 but have an 18 (or 25, I can't quite remember) that will register a fresh 2S as a 3S and will then shut down after about 30 seconds of running. Like you, I can run it a bit to drain down the battery slightly and then re-plug the battery to get the ESC to recognize it as a 2S. After that it works fine. I think I finally got exasperated with it and set it up for Ni batteries instead of Lipo. I just don't fly it to cut-off and have been happier with it since making the setting change. Have you found the programming instructions yet for the 40?

Hi..
Yes.. There where some instructions that came with the esc and all settings seem to work fine.... I did question them after I discovered this anomaly....
I have contacted the shop as I got it from Flebay and his reply was, it is the first one reported as faulty...(maybe a standard reply me thinks)
but he did say he has used a few and to send it back for testing... I did question the instructions but am waiting for a reply from him..
I will send it back to him on Monday and update the thread with any results if that's of any use....
If I get a working one, I'll type out the full working instructions as well......
Interesting you set for Nicd, I wouldn't have even thought of that... does it just work the same..?

Setting to NiMH mode doesn't affect the operation of the ESC, only how it determines the LVC point. Setting it to NiMH while using a Lipo is a bit risky in terms of Lipo battery life as the NiMH setting results in too low a cut-off point for safe operation of Lipo's IF your try to fly all the way to LVC. I quit flying when I find myself nudging up the throttle, or top speed at full throttle seems to fall off. Doing that, my Lipo's typically come down with an unloaded voltage of about 3.5 or 3.6 volts so they're well run down but not dangerously low.

Nipper: I've got a Plush 40a, and it's been completely reliable and easy to use. A friend has two Sentry 60a controllers, and they've been equally impressive.

Chellie: Will the Turnigy program card really work with the TowerPro ESC? I've got that card, and never tried it because I didn't expect it would work.

Well I must say that the shop I bought it from on Feabay have been great...
I was sent a very curtious email reply and great great service from them.. and sooooo cheap.
Not sure I'm allowed to post company names, but thank you Storm_Trade .
New one has arrived.. If any one would like the instructions for it (in my own words) that I have tried and tested please let me know..
