Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

The Silent Electric Fliers of San Diego will host a Watt Flyer Fly-In and is SPONSORING LUNCH for all WATTFLYER members that attend! I'll be your Event Director, and contact for the event.

ALL ENTRIES BEFORE 5-31-06 $20.00 complete
ALL ENTRIES AFTER 5-31-06 $25.00 complete

There will be more detail in the coming days but let me know what you think is a reasonable entry fee (remember lunch is sponsored by the SEFSD club!) that will be used for the event ONLY! More of your entry fee goes to the shwag!

You can watch this post (sticky maybe admin?) for more detail, and you can PM me here or email me at Jim@nitroblast.com

I just made this a Sticky.

I'm in! I voted $25.00 and a T-Shirt for the event. Let me know if you need any help or if there is anything that I can do to help make this happen.

Please only vote if you would be able to attend this event so we can get a accurate head count on how many would be wanting to attend.

Ok as mentioned, to try to help out here a couple of links:

Hotels are near, RV accomodations near (Mission Bay Campland 1/2 mile)

There is the South Shores Boat Ramp very nearby (100yds). Often, RV's park there overnight. You're on your own but I know that many stay there.

The event IS ON. Juily 22nd.

Please vote for your desired price range, and lets start to get some folks signed up.

POST ON!!

Default Flight Safety

I've only attended a few electric fun fly's and none of your club's events. At others, I have been shot down due to mistakes/poor policing in frequency controls and threatened by mid-airs due to mix of aerobatic and racetrack pattern flying. It's not fun to crash a favorite plane unneccesarily at a fun fly. Also fun/ competition event rules are often not well explained beforehand leading to misunderstandings and disqualifications, etc. Good planning and organization help make fun flys fun.

E-C,
I can understand your concerns, but Frequency Control is EVERYONES JOB. Any RC'er worth a hill of beans knows that you dont turn on a TX unless you have control of that channel via a control board, or other common system that most clubs use.

I can tell you that at the SEFSD Spring Fling there is a TX impound for regesterd pilots. Thats honestly about the best you can do, impounding TX's. At the Open House Fly In I'm scheduling the regular frequency control's are in place as normally used by the club, as to not impose too harshly on the regular flying activities of the club.

I hate to see anyone get 'shot down' but that blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the person holding the transmitter that didnt have the pin.

This is a Open House Fly In. There are no acrobatic events or racing scheduled. The event is to bring WattFlyer pilots togther and share our facilities with others in the So Cal ands surrounding areas.

I hope to see you there!

What kind of wind do you see on a "normal" day? It seems to get fairly windy on the coast.

Typical days are sometimes zero till 10:am with moderate (5~10) after then. Its usually light and nearly always right down the runway. There are exceptions of course, but many a summer day has light breezes enough not to throw any park flier around.

I didnt mention this earlier, but you MUST be a regestered WattFlyer member to attend this event. I am getting some regular 'club' entries, and they are being told they must regester as a WF member before they can attend ( and remember that is FREE)

Thats the idea, a WATTFLYER fly in.....

Regular SEFSD club members are welcome, as long as they regester here!

There is NO additional cost other than the entry fee. You do not have to join the SEFSD club to fly, but you must be regestered as a member of WattFlyer to be eligible to attend.

I'm going to assume that AMA membership is also required. I didn't see any mention of it in your post but the club requires it. I'm looking forward to flying with everyone in the warm summer sun.

Schedule is taking shape.

I was considering 2 types of fun fly event activities, and one static event.

Flying events will be a selection of typical fun fly contests such as (but not limited to):
  • Bomb Drop
  • Spot Landing
  • Limbo
  • Loops Aloft
  • Point to Point Mission
  • Two Minute TOUCH 'N' GO
  • Spindown
Scoring will be a simple low point method with time aloft used as any tiebreaker. No 'overall' winner, just event winners.

The static event would only be eligible for aircraft flown sometime during the day before static judging. Judging method and criteria will be announced the day of the event but is already selected. Aircraft used for the static competition does not have to be used in the fun fly events but must have had at least one flight during open flying.

No airplane classes, no powerplant or power supply classes. Just all 'bring the airplane of your choice' type stuff. You can bring as many aircraft as you would usually fly at a typical fun fly.

Sounding good so far?

The website will be updated as things change at http://www.nitroblast.com/sefsd.htm

Hi Nitro Blast, this event seems fantastic. I would love to go but I have read in other posts that you need to be an AMA member, is this true? I have no problem following regulations and rules the AMA has but I dont have a membership. Also where is the event taking place ( I know in southern california), address?
Thanks, Sam

Default AMA rules

Hi there mclarenhpi,
Its the club's rules, not mine. I'm so fortunate that they are allowing us to host the meet there, I certainly would not want to risk anything that could hurt the club.

Besides, if you go now to AMA, you can get a card in plenty of time. They even have a website that you can print your temporary card from and be flight ready in 10 minutes, and they even have a 3 month only membership if you dont want to be a complete member.

The Flying Site is located off Interstate Freeway 5 on Sea World Drive just one mile east of Sea World.
  • Enter at the South Shores II boat ramp driveway.
  • Turn right into dirt parking lot.
  • Look for cars on north side of Sea World Drive

Whatever your opinion of the AMA is the insurance is needed in this day and age. If nothig else it's a slightly expensive magaazine subscription.

For those thinking of coming from out of town the location of the flying field is perfect and is very close to down town. I'm almost positive that the weather will be sunny with a high of about 80.

Default Price Poll

I see that the majority wants to pay $20 but that makes it fairly limited.

Tell you what I'm going to do.

All Paid Entries Recieved BEFORE MAY 31 will recieve a PRE REGESTRATION DISCOUNT of $5.00

ALL ENTRIES BEFORE 5-31-06 $20.00 complete
ALL ENTRIES AFTER 5-31-06 $25.00 complete

Thats a pretty good incentive!

Default Dont delay in signing up!

It just dawned on me.... I havent been clear on this so I will now.

There will not be any day of event sign ups! I am having this event catered, so all attendance figures MUST BE IN BY JULY 15, 2006.

The sooner the better on regestration, because there is a $5.00 rebate when you regester BEFORE MAY 31, 2006
