Default HZ Super Cub Duribility Mods

I just ordered a HZ Super Cub LP at my local hobby store. It is supposed to come in on Friday. I'm very excited!

I've been browsing a lot of forums and I've seen a number of suggestions for making the Super Cub more durable for first time fliers (like using packing tape on the wings).

If you have any suggestions for durability mods or mods that would be helpful for a beginner, please post them here. I'll edit this first post with a lists of mods after I hear a few.

Also, what tools and parts should a beginner have handy for crash repairs?

Mods I plan to use:

  • I applied packaging tape to the center of the wing (where the rubber bands hold the wing to the fuselage), wing tips, leading edge of the wing, the inside of the cowl, and along the tail of the fuselage.
  • I used a Popsicle stick and 5-Minute Epoxy to reinforce the rear wing seat.
  • I used paper clips to attach the wing struts to the fuselage.
Other Suggested Mods:

I have seen some folks line the inside of the cowling with packing tape, nice and neat - that way if you nose it in you have a bit more shock absorption.

Spare props - these are for the non-LP version (I recommend http://www.rcslot.com for their good prices)
While your at it maybe a spare shaft w/ spur attached

Need nose, a good screwdriver set, packing tape, hrmm my toolbox has become so full of stuff its hard to think of what I use most... wattmeter is a good thing to have as you get more into the hobby

Poly glue (Gorilla, Sumo - either is great
CA (superglue, always good to have)

I dunno man, its all about how well you want to be prepared

Mods I would do:
Tape the leading edge of the wings
Tape the sides of the fuselage at the tail
Replace wing seat on fuselage with light balsa

Things to buy:
Rubberbands from Staples
Larger tires
Extra props and gear boxes

That just about sums it up. Clear packaging tape is your friend.

Thanks for the input.

Props
- How do I know what props can be used with the HZ Super Cub LP? Do they have to be 9x6? Would other sizes give a better performance?

Glue - I have some Devcon 5-Minute Epoxy and Loctite Super Glue. Will these work on the Super Cub? Which glue do other Super Cub owners use?

What are the rubber bands used for?

Do gear boxes break frequently?

This guy has some great videos on modifications to the SC.
There are about 25 of them. I have followed and done most of them and they really help with strength and durability.

Start with this one and click on more from him on the right panel and see the list of others.
Hope this helps.

Props - The non-LP Super Cub swings a 10x8 because of the NiMh battery's lower voltage (9.6v as I recall). The LP version has an 11.1v 3S battery so to keep from over-taxing the brushed motor, they propped down to a 9x6.

Glue - Sounds like you have what you need. Poly glue (gorilla or sumo) works well for non-field repairs because it foams as it sets and is not as brittle as an epoxy bond, but I say non-field because it can take hours to set. I persist on mentioning it because IMO it works especially well with the Z-foam of Parkzone planes.

First durability mod - simulator. First 5 crashes should be on a simulator not your plane.

Second durability/convenience mod - easy strut attachment

People seem to favor the GWS 10 x 6 prop (EP1060) as a slightly more powerful replacement for the stock 9 x 6. Also the Parkzone 10 x 8 prop for the Parkzone P-51 airplane. The Super Cub optional float kit includes a 10 x 8 prop for extra power needed for water takeoffs. These are mounted to the stock gearbox BTW.

Note: 10 x 8 is pulling a lot of amps through the ESC/motor so you may want to avoid running wide open throttle except when you need it.

Does anyone know a good good website to buy inexpensive props and other Super Cub parts?

I received my HZ Super Cub on March 12th. The next week I went home for spring break and unfortunately I didn't have room in the car for my Super Cub. It's too bad because there was some good flying weather that week. Now I'm back and I'm just waiting for a good day to make the maiden flight.

Here is a list of the mods I made:
  • I applied packaging tape to the center of the wing (where the rubber bands hold the wing to the fuselage), wing tips, leading edge of the wing, the inside of the cowl, and along the tail of the fuselage.
  • I used a Popsicle stick and 5-Minute Epoxy to reinforce the rear wing seat.
  • I used paper clips to attach the wing struts to the fuselage.

Good job, even with a blurry pic I can tell you did a great job.

I waited to mod mine as things broke and I think its a good idea to do them now before things have a chance to get damaged in the first place.

My Super Cub had it's first flights today. I crashed it a few times but the damage was pretty minor. Nothing that glue and tape can't fix. I'll post more detail later.
