Default My Hawker Hurricane

I've got to keep my hands busy ,even though Fouga 90 is still to get airtime (just not enough wind for it yet) Ive actually got a fair way into the build of my final sized 85" span Hurricane so thought I might stick some photos in of my next machine to launch from the slope

What a great balsa build. Don't you just love the shape of the Hurricane? I'd really like to know how you built the wings Stephen..

Thanks guys I'll try to keep it interesting
Baz the wings are foam core I have a wing foil program I select the foil I want to use scale it to the correct size and then print out the rib ,I then make a template and run some HD foam through my hotwire and I have a wing. It has to have the spar and attachment points and then sheeted but its a pretty easy process. BTW the stringers are Spruce the formers in the fuse are 1/8" ply the cowl and spinner are glass the tail feathers and front end of the fuse are Balsa the covering will be solartex on the fuse and tail and the wings after sheeting will be glasses with 8gram glass tissue.
AUW should come in around 4to 5 KG (about 81/2 to 10 1/2 lbs ) wing loading will be fairly light from estimates around 19 oz Sq Ft but time will tell on that one.

Steve, congratulations on a beautiful build thus far. I notice that the usual suspects have posted to your thread, so that is a good sign. LOL. They all have excellent taste in warbirds, so I am not surprised. I guess I am showing my warbird bias as well. Some things just deserve praise!

Thanks for the wing info Steve. It's great to see a combination of foam and traditional building techniques. Looking forward to seeing the finished model in all its beauty.

Nope I build them to fly but if you do it right they look right and fly right no extra effort required to build them . You just make the full size smaller why reinvent the wheel

Default bringing it up to date

thought I had better post some progress lots of fiddley stuff going in ,Just putting the flap bay into the wing with its stringers and support webs take heaps of time. who would have thought that a flat blade flap on the Hurricane would take so much work . The the actual flap panel with be made out of 1/8" light ply.

You said it all in one sentence, Steve.

One of my favorite planes of all time. Next you gotta build a P-40 that would really be awesome.

Default better update this

Sorry everyone,
Iv'e been a very lazy builder lately ,I blame good food and good ale
Still I have been slowly working on the Hurricane getting some of the fiddly stuff done,so heres a photo update of where I'm at oh BTW Iworked out how to overcome the big belly air scoop so it doesn't act like a plough on landing and rip off, I will simply add the long range fuel tanks to the wings which hang down just below the scoop so it will be like landing on skis

Default a little more

Because I'm doing the only Aussie version we had which is the all green with the white belly I've had to add the tropical air filter otherwise it just wouldn't be right, lucky I had bit of kevlar and glass tube which I cut length wise down the middle then using balsa block carved an intake.Think I got it about right
