Default New doppler speedometer application for windows and android!

I recently created an app for Android smart phones that automatically finds airplane speeds and announces them while you are flying, and I wanted to start a thread on it for input, suggestions, etc.

Features:
- Detects speeds for any electric plane that has a high RPM prop or fan, ie pretty much any pusher, pylon racer, or EDF.
- Announces speeds through the phones navigation voice as they are detected.
- Automatically detects the temperature of your local field using GPS and weather reports for maximum doppler accuracy.
- Records last 10 speeds, and displays last speed and highest speed in big letters on the screen.

Here's a video of the app in action:
I also decided to do the community a favor and port something that is basically the same as the android app onto the PC, so anyone with a windows computer can use my software to doppler their planes much easier. I'm hoping this will make everyone's life easier, especially those who don't know how to do doppler analysis using wave-o-scope. For the PC app all you'll need is a youtube video or an MP3 or WAV sound file of a plane making it's flight. The program will play the sound file back and will report any speeds it can find in it with the click of a button. This version definitely still needs a little work so check back for some updates, I'll announce them as they come in this thread.

I've made a simple site that describes both these apps a little better where you can also download the PC app: http://www.rcspeedo.info

Now this is just way too cool! Since I don't have a smart phone, I'll have to load this up on my laptop and see if it works good. I have a video run that I know the dopplered speed for, so I'll test it against that.

Thanks!

That is too cool . I'm going to download it this evening on my Droid but it will probably be next weekend before I get a chance to go flying. I can see using that all the time at the field just for the grins and giggles of it.

I've tested it on a plane that goes 225 MPH, and it worked on that (you have to enable 100MPH+ mode for that though ), I THINK it will work up to 250 at least, possibly more. You guys gotta get there first and let me know!

Speaking of that, if any of y'all have some doppler passes for planes that this program DOESN'T work on, please post it here so I can work on making it work! (this means 3-d planes, pattern planes, nitro planes :gasp

Great idea, wish I had an Android phone, but I've tried out the PC version. Sadly it hasn't worked yet!

File 1 is playing, but not detecting any speeds. It is a clipped together compilation of passes, but the first one is the best (dropped throttle early on most of the others.)
I Waveoscoped it to around 72 km/h.

File 2 is not playing (sample file included with waveoscope 2.1 I think).

It would be nice if the program remembered the directory you opened the last file in. Was annoying to navigate to the same directory several times when testing. It doesn't need to remember it between executions, just during the same session.
It also does not recognize all caps extensions like .WAV

OK so I took a look at the two files you sent, the first one isn't getting picked up because the lead in is two short. You need to have a good 1.5-2 seconds of audio where the plane is approaching the camera/recording device, or 1 second in "fast pass" mode, but in the first clip its more like half a second at best. For the second clip, it's simply because it's encoded in a really strange format. I had a hard time even finding a player that would play it I'll have to look into that one though.

As for saving the last file you loaded, I agree that would be nice, I need to find a way to do it without creating files wherever you are running the program though, as that would be quite annoying. I think I will find some way to put that in though, I'll let you guys know when theres an update.

(If you're interested in why the program needs the lead in time, here goes: it basically works by running a frequency scan on the sound clip every ~50ms, and it will only start "tracking" a frequency after 15 scans in "default" mode or 5 in "fast pass" mode where the frequency has stayed relatively the same. This equates to 750ms and 250ms of required approach time for both cases, but realistically it is normally more as the approach can be a little hazy. I can't just track every frequency all the time because that would lead to a lot of inaccurate readings, so I have to require you to make a good approach)

Haha thanks a lot guys! I'm seriously considering porting this to the iPhone, I've never done development on that platform though so I need some time to look into it before I decide one way or another.

I have it up and running on my phone. I checked a couple of videos just to see if it was working and it did. I didn't investigate the videos to see what speed they dopplered at...maybe later tonight.

Tomorrow morning I am going to sneak out with my wing and check it out IRL.

Played with it on some video - very cool man I have been waiting for something like this!

Might I suggest though a way to save and perhaps export the data collected in a flat file of some type, along with environmental information?

Very nice! I just dopplered my little MIG 29 profile plane at 45.9MPH.... That's much faster than I would have guesstimated!

I have a few suggestions though, which would make this program even better than it already is (I'm using it on Windows).

Firstly, on Vista it seems to need admin rights to convert from MP3 to Wav... May I suggest either changing this if you can, or at least adding some text or popup that explains that this needs admin rights... Had me confused for a little bit.

Secondly, please add the ability to select the units you are measuring in... In Australia we use Kph rather than Mph, so I have to convert the result after getting the reading. Same goes for C* and F*... Although I use celcius, I bet the Americans would love to have farenheit.

Lastly, more compatible audio formats would also be good, but even better would be the ability to select a video file and have the software just play the audio, which removes the need for the user to convert it themselves. I'm not sure on how difficult this would be to impliment, particularly for those odd formats, but it would be great to be able to do this with .avi files at the least.

Great job so far!

There is an option for changing the unit of speed from mph to kph. At least there is on my droid.

I love it

I was by myself so I set my phone on top of a fence post. My truck was only about 10 feet away and I noticed I was getting some pretty wicked echo off of it. Probably get better and more accurate readings in the middle of the field but I only had time to fly a couple of packs.

In default mode I was getting consistent readings on every pass. It was a lot of fun trying to see how fast I could get in a dive going with the wind.

In 100 mph mode it only caught one reading and it said 195 mph...I know that was not right. I'm not sure if it was the echo off my truck messing with it or the fact that the wing I was flying does not do 100 mph.

In fast pass I was getting the consistent readings on passes but it was also picking up the sound from me just flying around getting set up. Sometimes I was a good distance from the phone but it would still catch the sound and give a reading.

So for me this morning the default mode seemed to work the best.
