Default Now sure, finishing and painting foam planes

I have just, in the past few days, ordered my first unpainted plane. I would like to finish the surfaces very smooth without the normal foam bump. Is there a foam safe filler or base coat that I can use before final finish that will my FOAM not look FOAM?

At your local home depot, lowes, etc, you can get drywall spackle. Many guys on here use it to finish foam surfaces.

Do a search for techniques.

And if that it not available or you're not near a Home Depot or Lowe's then just got to any Wal-Mart and get a small can of Water Based Poly Urathane made by Minwax.

It comes in a spray also but for filling the regular can of liquid is best. Use small dixie cups to pour it out into for mixing and applying. Apply with a good brush, a paper towel or a playing card!

Mix a small amount liberally with talcum powder, baby powder, or baking soda to act as a filler. Doesn't shrink much but it will require several applications to fill larger dents and dings.

Sands easily to a very smooth finish and acts as it's own sealer for painting purposes. Pretty strong to boot.

I wouldn't bother with the spray can, as it tends to glob while spraying, regardless of how often you shake it. Stick with the can. Another idea would be to "silk" your plane. Painting over a silked plane is a breeze and it doesn't look like foam. It also adds a ton of strength to the airframe while still keeping it light. It's a lighter alternative to glassing. Good luck friend.

I use normal domestic vinyl silk emulsion ... brushes wash out in water .... piant dries and is good for weather that you fly in ! You can have matt, part matt or gloss finish ...
You can get it in any shade or colour you want by asking them to blend up what you want ..........

Spackle is going to add some excess weight. Not sure if weight is going to be too big of an issue with your setup, but might want to watch it.

The Faskolor paints are actually designed to be used on the INSIDE of acrylic RC car bodies. The "shine" is provided by the plastic! They are quite bright in color but have dull finish and will peel quite easily with handling on smooth surfaces. Need to be top coated with something in order to have a chance of lasting. Not saying they "can't" be used but it'll dry dull!! LOL!! Hey for military colors though it should be great!!
