It can be flown outside but there needs to be very little wind because the heli is very light.

As for range, you probably won't out fly the transmitter because it gets REALLY hard
to see when you get out more than 50 feet or so. I think the range is something like 200 feet or so.

Helicopters don't really fly.......
They're just so ugly, that the earth repels them.

Is it 3 or 4 channel? It says 5 channel but does it have full control left right forward back up down?

I have the CX2, and I found it was a rare day that the wind was calm enough to fly outside. However, I used to work 2nd shift, and found when I got home at midnight or later, it was calm enough. Since I added a Squirrel body with scale lighting, it was fun to fly at night. Also, at least on the CX2, the 5th channel wasn't used, and the lighting system I found plugged into it, and controlled the spotlight. That was the CX2, though, not the CX3.

Also, I find it's a bit big for flying in the house. (Was fun for the rare flight at work, though. Just don't tell my boss! ) If you're a proficient fixed wing pilot already, you may want to consider the MSR or SR120. I don't have the 120 ( yet! ), but understand that is a much more capable outdoor flyer. Do the research. It's a larger version of the MSR, and they are very stable hovering birds, I guess due to the 45 degree flybar, but can also get up and go, thanks to not being a co-axial, with the upper self-stopping rotor that you fight with the lower rotor to get it to move.

Ugh! Sorry I rambled. I have to get ready for work! TGIF!
