Default What do I need to convert to EP for Flair Cub 72" wingspan.

Hi everyone. I am new to the flying scene, I have played around with some parkzone planes, spitfire and P51 mustang, also 2 gliders, easyglider pro and DG1000, had a few crashes along the way but hopefully learned a little too. I want to move up a scale now and thought the cub would be a good trainer but I want to keep to electric

I just bought a Flair cub 72" wingspan with OS46 engine. I want to convert it to electic. Has anyone converted one of these? If so, what would the correct power set up for motor, esc and battery be? If not, what EP motor would be equivalant to a LA OS46 engine?

If anyone knows anything about this topic, your help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Flightsimfrank and Welcome to Wattflyers, this will work well for you. your plane is about 6 Lbs, this will be more than enough power and its inexpensive. use a 12x6 or 12x8 APC prop.

Hi Frank a very safe place to start is 25% of the wings cord from the Leading edge, then you can move the CG back untill you find the sweet spot, I think 25% back will be right on Take care and have fun, Chellie

Default Hi Chellie

Thanks for your help, would of been a little lost trying to find all this out. I have found a couple of UK sites that sell what I need and weighing up postage costs etc i will see if i can buy local, if not then it'll be your recommendations. My cub may be a little more heavy as it has 2 tins of white primer plus 1 tin of red gloss, so comming up a lot tail heavy on a third of wing measurements so to get it to 25% I have to really load the front with weight before she comes level.

Thats why i try to buy the biggest electric motor that will fit into the cowel I would rather have the motor weight for the balancing of the CG rather than to have to add dead weight, you can do that with in reason, because the bigger the motor gets, the lower the KV is on the motor, and the more batteries that you have to use, its a balancing act for sure Take care and have fun, Chellie

Default Hi Chellie

bought myself a Turnigy Aerodrive XP 4260 - 500KV Brushless motor, says it produces around 1400watts power, got it for 25 pounds from ebay. Do you think this one will suit my needs for Flair cub?

Hi Nidge. wrote off DG1000 on Monday, looped a loop up high, dived and pulled tight right, snapped wing, hit ground n pretty much snapped everything that was snappable but trying to peice it all together n if possible, reinforce wings with ally tubing. Got bigger motor for cub, just need 60amp ESC now. How did your flying go?

Oh dear!!! So was that classed as Ppppppppppppilot error? lol
I am sure that if it can be rebuilt you can rebuild it.

Glad to hear you have the motor for the cub but was battery will you have to use on it as that is a slow KV?

My flying was good but with a bit of tree rash!

Catch ya later.

That will work Perfect you will need to use a 6 cell lipo with that low of KV, some info from HK, this will give you some prop specs too. Buy 2-3 cell 5000mah 20 to 30 C Rating lipos, and hook them up in Series, it will be cheaper to do that incase one of the cell goes bad, you wont have to toss out a 6 cell pack.

3 cell lipo 5000 Mah 25C thats a 125 AMP lipo 5 amps x 25C rated ( Capacity ) =125 amps

Use this on a hyperion extra 260 40e with a towerpro n50 esc. Motor will rocket the 4.35lb plane vertical until it's a dot. Just as powerful as a .46 nitro with no mess. Nice to be able to wire 2 three cell batteries to 6 cell, use the batteries you already have

You will need a Series lipo connector, here is one for an example, use 12 gauge wire because of the higher amps of the lipos, what ever wire size the lipo has as a battery lead, that can be used in a series connection, hope that helps, Chellie

http://www.kintecracing.com/Electrical.html

Deans Series Connector Use this connector to run your lipos in series such as turn two 2s lipos into one 4s. Made with 2 male deans and 1 female deans with 12awg wire

I Like the Vulcan too, its a nice Delta, are you planing on using 2 or 4 EDf in it, To tell you the truth, EDFs are a PITA and low on power you might want to use 2 pusher Motors and props and paint them Black Just My 2 Cents worth. Take care, Chellie

My word Flightsimfrank it sounds to me like you have quite a hanger!!!!
Maybe you could let us all know how many aircraft you have in perhaps a list form?

I only have a poor 5 which include:-
Multiplex Easyglider.
J-3 Cub.
PZ Ultra Micro J-3 Cub.
Escale Waco.
Cessna 182.

I do also have 2 more that are not air worthy at the moment

PZ Fokka Wolfe
PZ Ultra Micro P51 Mustang. (I took the motor out of this and transplanted it in the Micro J-3).

Iwas thinking of EDF Fans but like you say, cant find anything powerful enough at 40mm max diameter fans. So will probable go for pusher motors. As the Vulcan is not hand launch it dosnt matter about prop danger at launch. Will keep you posted. I will have to take some pics.
