Default AURE.......Stabilator???

I was reading an article in modelairplanesnews.com and I came across the AURE E-glider. It reads, " Pitch on the AURE is controlled with a flying tail, or stabilator, so there are no hinges on this surface." Wouldn't this make it capable of extremely fast pitch changes, so much so that it would hard to fly and cause the "drunken squirrel" effect? Pros? Cons? Or is it the exact opposite, making the "elevator" extremely effective & energy efficient at slow speeds? Getting ready to start another build, but might get this one first. thanks

It would only be as sensetive as you make it. It just wouldn't have as much movement as an elevator on a standard configuration. It's more efficient, as it removes the drag of a standard stab-elev configuration when it has to be trimmed.

I have 3 gliders that have a stabilator type tail, and they also have the same type of setup on the rudders. They fly great, and like xmech2k said, they are as sensitive as you make it. You don't need much movement, to get a lot of effect.

I have found it is imperative that there is no slop in your controls. Use good servos with no gear backlash, good tight, but smooth control linkages, and good hinges. All of these things can give you slop or play in your controls.

Try to gently move the surfaces both directions, without moving the servo, if you have any play, find it and fix it. doing this made my planes fly much better.

I hope this helps, the Aure looks like a very nice plane

thanks guys for the info. That flying tail would be fairly easy to make for my scratchbuild. Like you said, WF, slop is a big concern for me especially with a $140 plane, but it shouldnt be to hard to fix. Still an "intermediate beginner", but I just cant see a reason why not to get the AURE!!

have a good one

The plane I just finished restoring is a Hobie Hawk glider, it's 35 years old but now looks better than new. It has both surfaces that are full flying, or you could say the entire surface moves.
They had a bad reputation for the Hobie Wobble, back in the 70's. I put a high level system in mine with no slop, and it flew straight and smooth. Some people would balance it too far back which will also cause it to be unstable, and then blame it on the design, since it was radical at the time. The Radian looks to me, like a styrofoam Hobie Hawk.
I do not want to damage this plane as they are VERY HARD to find, and mine is worth probably $500, check them out on eBay, you'l see what I mean. About 3 weeks ago I saw an unstarted Hobie Hawk kit sell for $1010.00!!
Now I need to start working on my other Hobie Hawk.
One I call YellowHawk, the other I call BlueHawk. I guess you could say I am sort of crazy about these planes. I am going to build a new fuselage, that will look very close to stock but have a motor in it. I will not cut into a collectors item, to install a motor.
I like the AURE and if I didn't have so many planes I would order one.

GO FOR IT !! and have some fun!!!

It's almost Zen like, to fly a good glider.

Long live the Hobbie Hawk~ a sailplane which was way ahead of its time. I remember buying my very first one, it was 110 bucks....which was like a 1000 bucks to me back then. One of the most beautiful sailplanes in flight to this date. And yes, the Radian in flight looks very close to the exact profile. Would love to see yours on video..bring back old times!

The models you buy with that tail dont allow so much travel that its hard to fly unless you use a super long servo arm. They fly nicely I have found.
