Default UPS "Virus"??

Just got an email from "UPS", indicating I've got a package that will be delivered this week. It looked very official, but a little different than previous emails from UPS. Usually you can just click on the UPS delivery number and go straight to the tracking info. This email did not have that feature. I wrote down the "UPS delivery number", went directly to UPS, found the listed UPS delivery number is not valid.

Since we get a lot of UPS orders delivered to our home, I got curious. The email has an invoice "attachment". A quick check with Google indicated UPS rarely sends emails with attachments.

Further checking, those attachments are usually loaded with virus programs. The attachment looked to be a MS Word document. But it's actually an executable file. Delete the email, don't open it.

That email message is fake.

Word to the wise.

Thanks for the info. Amazing how creative bad people can be. If only they applied it to good causes...

If you get an email from UPS, watch for any "attachments" to their email. UPS doesn't use attachments.

I guess the questions i would ask myself (being a natural cynic) if i got such an email:
  1. How would USP get my email address
  2. Why didn't they call me by name instead of 'dear sir', or 'dear UPS customer' or whatever opening line they used (i assume they didn't use your name)?
  3. Why didn't they just drop a note through my door saying they tried to deliver the package like they always do
Basically with email it pays to be cynical. Point 2 is a good filter method you can apply to any emeil you receive. If you get an email that you were not expecting from someone you don't know and it does not address itself to you by name then 99.9% of the time it's spam.

I hate virus's. I just had to reformat my other computer. I was attacked by someone claiming to be Mircosoft Security 2011. I have very good anti-virus but it sneaked in under the radar. Its not a big deal just annoying. I keep all my goodies and valueble files on thumb drives. I scanned all of our photos and made 3 archives. One at the house, one in my toolbox, and one a my sister=in=laws. I always figured if we had a fire the photos would be the thing the we could not replace. They also have pictures & videos of all our stuff and my airplane goodies . A picture is worth a thousand words

Me too, I hate Viruses, I use ESET Nod 32, it wont let nothing in your computer, it stops it even if it thinks its a virus or malware at the front door, try it you will like it, the other anti virus programs let viruses into your comp, then you have to take them out this program wont let them in at all, ESET stops them cold.

Do not Judge, or you too will be Judged. For in the same way you Judge others, you will be Judged, and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to You.

When I got hit by a "Ransomware" virus a year ago, Norton Virus protection told me that world wide, several hundred new virus programs are created every day.
