![]() I had a 22" length carbon fiber tube laying around, left over from the trebuchet arm we built for the Science Olympiad competition. It made a very nice, light spar. I cut out the mid-section of the wing, inserted the tube and glued the wing back together. Since I have to wait a couple of days to order the upgrades from headsupRC, I guess I'll see how it flies on the stock motor and three channels. Bonus: A kid down the street gave me a Cox 2-channel ducted fan A-6 Intruder he didn't want anymore. When I upgrade the cub, I think I'll use the ESC and reciever to turn the intruder into a 3 channel plane my sons can play around with. |

NICE JOB!!!
Please tell me you'll put ailerons on it before you fly it? Not sure it'll be very steerable with rudder only now that you've taken out all the dihedral. |

I'm really not that patient. Its the only plane I have that is flyable right now. I have a scratchbuilt micro waiting for electronics and motor, and a 0.40 gas powered Cub kit that needs to be built. What is the worst that can happen to it?

LOL.....Ailerons are your friends, if you can install a CF Rod in a wing, cutting ailerons and adding a couple of servos(or even just one) would be a simple mod and cheap way to make her fly better with more control, but the worst still could happen!

Yeah, but the stock ESC/reciever can't accommodate that extra servo. I need to buy a speed controller, motor, and two additional servos (flaperons) to make it 4 channel. That is about $54 from headsupRC. Not a lot of money, but I am always terrified that the car is going to cost an arm and leg to get through inspection (shudder). It goes in on Tuesday.
I'll try to keep your voice in the back of my head when the urge to go fly strikes, but no promises!

So, I just couldn't resist taking the newly wing clipped and flattened cub out for a flight. It doesn't fly poorly onelevator and rudder alone, but it definitely has to be "driven." No big deal. This did allow me to discover that the previous loss of rudder authority is due to an inocuous little creas at the bottom of the rudder, above the control horn.
The worst that could happen is that the cub can "land" in a brushy area at the perimeter of the field, necessitating this person to walk through loads of poinson ivy to retrieve. I am VERY sensitive to poinson ivy! Hope the diswashing detergent got the urishoil off! |

POISON IVY!!!! vs a CUB, dunno about that one!!lol Thinkin I would just call that one a goner or might just have to train my dog to go get it. Then don't pet her for a month til the oil wears off!

Gotta ask, if your doing it on the cheap why don't you just switch the rudder servo to the wing for the ailerons? It's just a bank and yank anyway, so the loss of rudder isn't a really big deal. Just a thought....

I was thinking about that, but I really want to upgrade it to the brushless motor and bon-fide 4 channel with flaperons. I'll just need a few more days of patience!
