Darn! you got me excited about the Japanese porn. You are right on the money. This plane got me excited some time back and I had that eye candy experience. . Thanks very much for the complimentary comparison. Almost fell off my chair here. Anyway the scale is very odd in size because it had to fit in my pickup truck with some clearence with the tailgaight up. So that made it 6 feet. with2 inches to spare. I added nose and tail guns and it fits in the truck touching front and rear. The guns are flexible wwith dowels and a couple layers of shrink tubing. They spring back when they are back in free space. So the wing on the real one is 130 feet. My wing is 8 feet and 4 inches. I just calculated in my thoughs and it is around 1/15th scale. My GWS Zero is maybe 1/12th scale.

Bob i was wondering what you had to haul yours around in ,i have a company 3/4 gmc cargo van . I am building a cradle for the fuse and a stand so i can hold my wing with the props straight up . I think pvc tubes with pipe foam sticking up from a base should work out fine. What are you planning to build next neon ? I want to build somthing a little smaller ,pat trittles little 50 inch tri pacer has been calling me in my sleep.lol joe

I do not have anything special to haul my plane around. Just a Toyota pickup truck as I mentioned with the plane stuffed in there. It has a cap on it. The cradle is just an old piece of plywood with sawn foam blocks on it. I would like to have some straps on it but I have not figured out what or how it should fit. The middle wing is bolted on and after setup on the plane it will stay there. Of course the outer wings plug in and that solves my storage, transporting, and handling problems.

My next plane is a WWI Austrian fighter. I build obscure planes as I like to be on my on track and not run of the mill. The tune on my drum has a different beat. The plane is a Aviatik-Berg D-1. I am not sure of the size yet but I think 1/5th scale with about a 55 inch wing. Now it looks like a flying clown with the unique hexagon color swatches. Here is a link that shows a scale model that was built. I think the the swatches will be around 2.5 inches each. It sould be good on my visual flight and that is good with me. Page 10 in this thread.

Now this is strange. I am not familiar with Pat Trittle and his Piper Tri-Pacer but I happen to have an original Sterling kit in my closet of a Tri-Pacer in that size. I do not know what I am doing with it. I know 2 peices of 1/8th plywood formers are lost but they are on the plans. I may eBay it someday. They are a nice looking plane.

Just did a small group of shots out in the daylight on my grass. June 30th. Nothing new went on because I had to work on my yard some for the holiday weekend and I actually cut the grass and lots of trimming. Yuk!

Joe , Thanks. I have been even chain sawing some trees near the house. You know how it is with the 4th weekend. It is going to get very busy here this weekend. Kids and fireworks every day.

Chellie, How sweet to pay another visit. Thank You! I feel honored being graced with your presence again. Not many modelors can have a celebrity pay visits 2 times in a thread. Great! Nothing new yet and I do want some video but it will have to be at a slow time when not to many locals around. The place I want to test has a dock and a boat ramp on the lake. It is awful with boats going in and out constantly. It will get done though.

You might beat me to the maiden bob my esc wont handle the new 22.2 volts iam giving her so i just found a new esc and have to order it from the UK. My parents own 5 ackers in the boonys so we go there for the fourth and eat and fire off the noise makers. Have a great fourth bob. joe

Joe,
I suppose as even another option you may have is to put in 4 Esc's with the lesser volts so the motors do not burn out. I also have been warned on my Build log that I may have trouble with my Esc's due to the wiring layout. I will update as things happen. We shall see. Likewise on the 4th. Dang it, Neons and Joe. You guys now have me obsessing on building a Grumman Goose after seeing your planes. My wife claims I hyper-focus on things that capture my fancy and ignore all else. Well, I can't stop thinking about the Goose.

Anyone remember the tv show, "Tales of the Gold Monkey" from the early '80s? I LOVED that show! I remember watching it while I built my first rubber powered plane-Guillows J-3 Cub, of course. I was 11 at the time (1982). I was convinced that the mechanic on the Goose was to go on to become Gregory Boyington in WWII. The actor looked EXACTLY like Pappy Boyington. Well, at least I thought so at the age of 11. I was a bit obsessed with WWII aviation (hyper-focused?).

Anyway, it centered around a Goose, THE most graceful aircraft to ever take to the skies from the water. Well, maybe the PBY rivals it. No, its the Goose. But, I vividly remember the first time I saw a Catalina in the air. Can't say the same about the Goose. Ok, so the Goose and the PBY are equally beautiful, but I really think the Goose has more class. Crap! See what I mean???

If I made my choice it is the Goose. It is classic lines, roomy for equipment. and rugged. The Catalina is classy curves, no room, and not rugged. I built an Albatros Hu-16A 2 years ago. Scratch of course. See the vid in the same vid pages in Vimeo as the Emily . It has a link to my build log.. Got raves last year at the Waterfly Event. Made from 5 view drawings. The only thing I should have done was put on a faired into the hull water rudder.

The first taxi and then liftoff was a struggle and just lifted and landed with the large amount of excess nose weight with 1/2 flaps. I got good taxiing and steering and I got the second lift off after I removed 4 ounces. I also had full flaps which may have been too much. I guess it will be next Monday or later for next trial. I will not know how long it will fly until I do at least 3 minutes then check what is left in the battery. I believe the plane will cruise at 3/4 throttle trimmed. After flight time determination I will up the size of the battery and remove more nose weight.

I removed all the cowls and did some motor controller sealing I then removed 12 more ounces of weight which leaves 1lb left in there now. The MAC is a line of balance on the wing. The % percent is forward that line. The MAC was very far forward at 25%. I believe I am within a safe level now at 15% . In other words, the 4" setting as the plan (25% MAC) is 2 1/4 inches forward the hull step. I am now 5 1/4inches at 15% MAC which is 1" forward the hull step now for the next trials..

Keep at it neons it will fly. My solents cg is about1/4 to 3/8 behind the main spar on my plan ,i did measure it but have forgot already. Your plane and mine are about the same size and our wings look about the same ,mine is 99 inches . I will check the measurement from the leading edge with a tape and see where mine is at . Mine is 4 3/8 from the leading edge of the wing and that is 1/8 behind the main spar. my cg is 3 7/8 in front of were my step begins . Sounds like the standerd 1/3 of the wing neons. I got my new esc hooked up and it has almost twice more power than it had. I stoped in to see if you had any update neons its been a bit and the last you posted you were going soon to try her again. joe

I ran another trial take off Tuesday and it reacts poor on lift off. Seems marginal on power. I think I am going to up the power this time. I do not want to remove any more nose weight yet. The plane slowly picked up speed and came up on the first step then slowly gained more speed and I upped the elevator as she sped more. She struggled to lift a few feet off to a few feet then stallled and splashed down in the water. I tried 2 more times and the same thing. (I found out later the last 2 tries had 2lbs (1200Grams)of water in her from the dip and spray). I guess we never expect the extra weight picked up from spray droplets and weepage.

I am working on a newer motor and Esc's order right now. I also got water in the outboard motor and burnt that Esc out. One improvement I found that would probably be necessary is a bilge pump hose to suck out water onsite if any is picked up. It never came off the water in the next 2 tests. So I think I will place a suction hose in here with a strainer. I have to remove the access hatch and wing now to air the plane out dry. I am adding more sealing and a forward longitudal step into the hull also that was not built per plan..
