Default Cessna 182 RTF Balancer

I just bought a cessna 182 and it came with a balancer and a cord with alligator clips for a car battery. I have looked but haven't found any information using original balancer. I wanted to know if i could use an old wall adapter to plug into my balancer, balancer specifies 10-14volts 1A input, I have a westel from a modem which is 12v 1A output would this work? Isen't the balancer the one transforming the Li-P, Li-Ion, NiMh, Nicad etc to what it needs? Car battery is much different from lipo? So why would that be safe and wall charger wouldn't.
