Default Looking for a good quality camera

I'm trying to do mapping with my UAV, and my 808 keychain camera just doesn't have the quality. Basically I'm pulling frames out of the video and stiching them together with a panorama program.

The camera doesn't have to be a video camera, but it would have to be able to take a still probably every second or two. I can rig it up to a relay to close the shutter switch.

It needs to be small and light and fairly easy to mount. I'm currently using a single micro servo to stabilize the roll axis on the 808 camera.

Define small and light.

Or tell us what plane you are using to lift it.

Go Pro is likely what you are after.

+1 on the Go Pro.

If it is good enough for television producers, its plenty good enough for me.

Can't beat the GoPro for the money, but beware it has an extremely wide lens. It's 170 degrees in 720P mode. I've used it on a 450 heli for areal shots before. I'm not sure how your software will deal with the fish-eye perspective.

Gopro has a fisheye lens, I'm not sure if that can be changed. If you are on facebook, look up gopro and hit 'like'

plenty of cool pics, that is for sure.

I don't think a fisheye lens will work. Gopro also looks a bit bulky...

The plane it's going on is an e-flite apprentice.

Basically I've decided I want something that's cheap, light, easy to mount, and takes really good stills, since video is not necessary for mapping.

Ideally it would easily mount on a pan/tilt like this one: http://www.lynxmotion.com/p-288-lynx...no-servos.aspx

You can look into the cannon elph line of cameras, I use an old 5mp one and it does great. You can find them on ebay as cheap as $20. Mine is an sd450. The elph line is relatively smaller than other digital cameras. Haven't looked to see what new stuff they've come out with lately.

I also use a Fuji WP Finepix for aerial work, its small and light, does video and stills.

This is a clip of me testing my Gaui 330X with the Fuji camera

Camera removed for this photo!

Also, check out htp://www.Blip.com.au they have a large selection of AP/AV equipment, and camera interfaces, where you can plug your camera into your RX and control it from the ground.

I have a go pro on my Traxxas Stampede that I plan to install on a chaos 600. I think it will work well or at least I hope it will.

the problem is that I really don't need a screen, or zoom, or even a case. I just need a quality sensor with a normal lens, a shutter button and a microSD card.

I guess if I can't get that, I'll have to figure out a way to mount a bigger camera. I've finally reviewed some roll-stabilized footage from my 808 camera, and I don't think pitch stabilization is necessary at all. So ideally i'd find something small enough to mount on the micro servo I already have installed:
I'm looking at the #13 808 camera, which probably has a 1080p sensor. It's still susceptible to that image wobble thing when there's vibration present, though.

Here's a frame from my current camera (taken at dusk, so not always that dark, but you get the idea. Not even google maps satellite quality.):

yep, i was about to say they have keychain cameras with better resolution if that is all you need. but they still aren't the best. i like how you've got your camera set up.

I use a FlyCamOne with a gyro on the lens for stabilization:

The FlyCamOne has the ability to be controlled via the TX. You can start/stop video , take stills, and adjust the lens direction.

Watch it in action:

Default FlyCamOne HD

I use a flycamone HD 720. It will take a shot every 2 seconds on its own. They are not available in the US, you need to order from the German website.

If you are tech savvy, there is a lens mod for the GoPro from Sunex that removes the fisheye...

I was hoping someone would try the aftermarket GoPro lens and report on it. I like the gopro but it is just too wide. Look at this footage (shot on my HFP X-8). It's waaaayyy too wide. It looks like you can see the curvature of the earth.

For about $40, you can get the HD 1280x720 update to the old 808. It's no GoPro, but it's light and cheap. FWIW.

Just thought I might share a bit about the little Staypro 45G Pen Camcorder at Xheli for only $49.70... I know the price shows higher but when my wife ordered mine this is what we paid for what ever reason...

Name Code Qty Each Options
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
STAYPRO 45G HD-DVR FPV 86P-948H-HD-MiniCam 1 49.70
Camera/Digital Video
Recorder(DVR) w/
5-MegaPixel+ HDMI 1280 x
720 30fps
(Shipped)
USPS Tracking Number:
--- --- --- ---
Subtotal 49.70
Shipping 4.95
Tax 0.00
Total 54.65

It shoots 720p which is1280x720x30fps... From all I read it has sharper imaging than the Keychains, although there is a new 1080p Keychain that is suppose to be coming out, or maybe is already out, that could be a real contender if it works...

I do want one if they are out because there really is a big visual advantage to true 1080p which is 1920x1080 resolution over the 720p format of 1280x720... If it has good optics, exposure, sharpness, saturation, and a decent menu system I want one...

The internal batteries on many of these cheap-o's are a bummer and many have poor quality charging problems yet others swear by them as working perfectly... Many have to be factory reset all the time from lockups and many require tinfoil shielding due to our ESC's causing noise interference that shuts off the recording as happened on mine... Each purchase is a risk though on these cheapies and even if you read the GoPro reviews some have problems with them too at $300...

Here's a video of my little $49.70 Staypro 45G... Ain't great and ain't bad I guess... Also a couple pics of my mounts I built for my Multiplex FunCub... The video was taken with the Staypro Velcro'd onto the side of the fuselage...

Happy Flyin'
bnick
