Question Beefed up SC Wing

Any tips on beefing up the wing? I know there's are several different variations but I was looking for tested setups. I am looking to flatten the wing and add alerions. I will be adding a 480 size brushless motor. Also heard I may need to beef up the tail? What you think?

Thanks in advance
Caleb

Why mess with success? Mine is stock, and I'm into my 4th year with it: it looks like a Cub, and flies like one, reliably.

The only "reinforcement" was a 1" band of fiberglass shipping tape, same as what we used on Ace wings 40 years ago...

You had no issue with the added power of the 480 and no issues with alerion controls with dihedral still in place? Not questioning what you say just want to make sure.

I removed the dihedral from my wings, but many don't and seem perfectly happy with the plane. Its really hard to do something that makes the plane NOT fly well!

There are many options to reinforcing the wings. I cut the mid-portion out of the wing, inserted a 0.405" carbon fiber tube into the wings and glued back together. I haven't reinforced the tail feathers. Haven't had any issues with them.

I recently read where one guy simply weighted his wings down to flatten them and put packaging tape on the bottom side. He says it works fine. If so, its a lot simpler than what I did!

All of my landings are three point landings if you count the spinner, too

Hi Caleb,

On my 2nd Super Cub, I opted to install ailerons but, I did leave the dihedral in as I still wanted a relaxing model on my hands when the need for good control landings are needed and not ride the rudder so much and still have a slow flyer.

With leaving dihedral, I still can turn the model with rudder alone and the benefits is that you do not disturb the wing lift by not touching the ailerons for the turns and this provides the slow characteristics of the model right out of the box but, yet it gives the added performance when you like some neat rolls and sustained inverted flight and other neat stuff.

As to re-enforce the wing assembly which is a mandatory thing since there is no spar of any kind in the wing assembly, I just used 3M brand Performance Clear Packing Tape of 2-inch wide and taped the underneath side of the wing without flattening the wing as again my goal was to keep the dihedral.

Here is a short Video of my 2nd Super Cub with ailerons, dihedral and using a BP Hobbies Motor (BP A2217/9) which is a 950Kv motor and swings the APC "Slow Flyer" 10 X 7 propeller using generic 3-Cell, 2200mAH, 25C, Li-POLYs.

Oh, by the way, I did try it with the E-Flite 480 (1020Kv) and found it a bit too over powered so, this motor when to my larger World Models P-51D EP-50.

Oh, I almost forgot!

I still use the plastic wing struts as they are still functional.

One day back in August 1, 2009 I was tooling around and messing with some high G's and I had a broken Strut that was detached at the rear of the wing and continued flying the model (Of course this was before the 3M Clear Packing Tape) and this is what happened!

Repairs are so easy with this model (White Glue and cure overnight!)

I too left the dihedral in mine. I am able to roll it, loop it bu no knife edge. To chicken for that . I love it I also used the same aileron measurments that guapo used as well. Brings a whole new Cub to you. I have made a spare wing with no dihedral Using Tape and heavy books to flatten it and wlll one day use it just have not needed to

Good luck and have a blast

Happy flying may your crashes be limited and if they are not limited let them be cool.

Hey Fishbonez,

Go 5 mistakes high and roll it 90 degrees and apply gentle rudder for the knife edge.

Mine does a great job of knife edge and it maintains knife edge all around the field.

The trick is that the Ailerons are still ailerons and Rudder is your Elevator and Elevator is now your Rudder.

One more time class!
