Welders Glue

I keep hearing about the use of Welders Glue for hinges, etc. Where can it be acquired? I'm striking out locally in Spokane so far. Lowes HW doesnt carry it here.

Never seen it at Walmart, but it is always stocked at Lowe's.

Not stocked at Lowe's, Home Despot, Wallyworld, Auto Parts stores or LHS in Spokane. I'll have to try an on-line source. Greg at West Michigan Park Flyers said he would be carrying it but does not have in stock at this time.

A guy on E-Bay has some but it's in lots of 4. I don't need 4 tubes of the stuff.

pdown1231, we got it down hear in Kennewick. WA can't remembr if it was Lowes or Home Depot. I have not tried it though because I use DT foamboard and according to to lable it will eat that kind of foam.

I haven't been able to find Welders for a year.

Gone to the Loctite Automotive or Loctite Stick N' Seal Original brand (Walmart). Virtually the same as Welders. I've gone to glued hinges on all my EPP planes but don't overdue it when making glued hinges, it's tuff stuff. Better to go light and add a little in spots after the first application dries. ALSO...this stuff eats Depron, test it on your material first. I completely destroyed a Depron wing on a Yak55 to my chagrin.

Most Lowes stock it, but for some reason it's not always with the glue, sometimes its on an end cap and I've found it in the plumbing section. If you go to the customer service center they should be able to help. It's actually called Homax Professional Welder, here's the Lowes stock number: Item #: 74526 | Model #: 730657 if nothing else, you can order through Lowes on line.

OK! I have acquired the Locktite Stick and Seal and tried it on some sample Depron hinges. So far, it looks really good. 2 hours setting time gives you time to have second thoughts with "full strength" in 24 hours. Only $3 at Lowes. I also purchased a tube of Beacon's 3 in 1 Advanced Adhesive at Joanne's fabrics ($4 a tube with really nice tip applicator). It also works really good... and FAST. You should use it on small runs as it dries very quickly. for those of us with a low patience tolerance level, it is the Depron and EPP foamie hinge material of choice

There seems to be two differant Welder glues we are talking about here.

One in post #2 on this thread in a video posted by FS Gilbert.

And another Welder glue on this thread posted by Voltron, post #13.

I've used the larger silver tube 'Welder' for years on Coroplast from post 13. 4 oz tube for around $3 at Walmart. The other, which is named 'The Welder' glue in post 2 video(sometimes The Welder Jewelry glue)in a red tube. I have no experience with it.

The 'Welder' is much cheap and in a larger silver tube. It seams thicker more like Goop.

The 'THE Welder' is in a 1 oz red tube for around $7

Has anyone used both of these?

Considering the price difference I can't believe they are the same stuff.

there are plenty of on-line sources but no local ones in Spokane. $3 for a 4 oz. tube is good but with a $10 Shipping cost I'll stick (no pun intended) with the Locktite at only $3.

I was not aware that their shipping charge was so high. I would also stick with the Loctite.

I have purchased WELDERS Contact cement, in the silver tube, from Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and Auto Zone. I'm wintering in Huachuca City, Arizona in a motorhome. I keep a couple of tubes in my tool box for quick repairs.

I used some last week to repair several cracks in a plastic skylight which leaked every time it rained. I have not had a leak since I made the repairs. However, a new skylight is on order.

Do you have a Dollar store or.a General Dollar store in your area? They both carry a line of adhesives made by Pacer induustries. A name well known to our hobby. They have a contact cement that I use as a general type adhesive. Use it sparenly as it's tough to remove once it has hardened. They also have thin CA in .07 ounce plastic bottles. 2 bottles in a blister pack for a buck. Also have CA gel in a squeeze tube, 2 .07 ounce tubes per pack. I keep a couple of bottles/tubes in my field box at all times.

The contact cement comes in a .25 ounce squeeze tube.

Try Z RC 56 Canopy glue. I have used it to repair torn foam hinges on EPO foam and it works great. It sticks to both EPO and standard packing foam extremely well and certainly is not going to attack any foam, it is water based. It is as flexible as the original foam and I have pulled on the hinge hard enough that I thought it might rip the foam itself without damaging the glue line at all. It does take a while to cure so it is not for the impatient. Overnight is plenty of time though.

I bought some Beacons 3 n 1 yesterday that seems to work good. Even if it does eat the foam just a bit.

Using an adhesive for hinges sounds like a great idea. I'm wondering how well hinges made by this method would hold up from long term use. Anyone done this type of hinge and had them last a few years or so?

Like anything that is involved with flexing, you have to look at the hinges before you put the plane in the air, especially if you're an aggressive flyer and use the same plane over and over again. I've had glued hinges go a year before a touchup was needed. I've since moved away from glued hinges and gone to surgical tape...sofar not a failure.
